Hyploglycemia I've been seeing this term a lot on here the past couple of days. What exactly his it? I mean obviously low blood sugar right? Is it something that a pup is born with, or they get it later on through life? Anyone have any good links on it? |
Yes it is low blood sugar. It can be caused by not eating well, too cold, too hot, stress, not enough rest. Usually occurs to small puppies under 12 weeks of age, but can occur in older dogs also. You can do a search here on YT or just search the internet. There are lots of good information and sites available. Sorry I don't have a link at this time.:) |
Thanks for the response! What is the severity of this? From what I've read, it seems like it can be really bad...is keeping Nutrical w/ him at all times a good idea to prevent this? And when in doubt, I use it..should I keep doing this? |
The hypoglycemia can be mild or can be very severe. There have been dogs n here that have died from it. I always keep Nutrical on hand and use it on occassion. The last time I used it Chachi had diahrea and the vet wanted to fast him and I gave it to him so his blood sugar didnt get low. |

I always make sure I have nutrical on hand even though macy is over a year old she is only 4lbs and I want to make sure I am prepared. The first yorkie puppy I was supposed to get died from hypoglycemia a week before I was suppossed to get her. There is a ton of info on here about it. |

I had a puppy that got it he was about 7 weeks old, I put him outside to play with his Mom for a 1/2 hour. Came in he ran around and played and all of sudden my daughter said look at him he just laid down and went to sleep I jumped off the coach ran over picked him up and got Karo syrup, gave him Karo syrup and my husband drove like a maad man to the emergency vet,,,,,, Thank God because that is exactly what happened his sugar level dropped and because we gave him Karo syrup right away we saved his life. His Electro's were increasing as we were thier. But it can happen up to 12 weeks is very crucial. |
Sissy will be year old next week. She is a very small bodied 4 lbs. I keep Nutrical on hand and still give it to her if she isn't eating well, or especially if we have been outside for any length of time when it is very hot. I haven't heard nearly as much on older yorkies having trouble with hypoglycemia, but it makes sense that it could happen at any age. I would rather be prepared and use it just in case. |
Thanks for the info guys...very helpful! :) |
