Food and Car Seats My 3 yr. old Yorkie, which I have had for 4 days will not eat hard food. Her appetite is healthy, and she loves canned food, but at this rate her teeth will be in horrible condition soon. She will not touch the hard food my breeder sent home. I don't know if she ever ate this brand as the breeder had 8 dogs in the house, so how could she keep track of this. Anyway, I have tried three diff. kinds, and today Petco sent me home with samples and said to soak them in water to make like a gravy. She did not touch it, and besides this would not help with tartar control. Any suggestions? Also, I took Sadie to Petco to fit her with a harness. It was so hot, that I did not put her in her carrier. I strapped the seat belt together, and then put her leash around it so she could not move and sit in my lap. She was fine, and slept the entire trip. Has anyone used car seats? Any other ideas? Thanks. Kate |
I've never had problems with Gus eating so I'll leave that for someone with better ideas. I have a car seat for Gus because he gets carsick but what is really important is having them in a harness and strapped to the seatbelt. What you are doing is fine as long as the leash is secure and not too long. Imagine slamming on your breaks, how far forward would she go? The do sell straps designed to attach to harness and seatbelts. They also make car harnesses with extra padding for added safety. I got mine at Petsmart (I think it was $9.99). Hope that helps. :) I'm a safety nut so I have to add if you have airbags you might want to make sure she is far enough back not to be hit by it or put her in the back seat. |
Great point. Never thought about the air bags. I know their necks are delicate, which is why I bought the harness, but I was just going to leave a collar on her when driving, and a harness just for walking. I don't think I will take her in the car now, except for the vet. Our weather is also getting warm again, and that will be too much for her. Many thanks. Kate Quote:

I don't like to scare people but I have to say I think it would be very dangerous to have her hooked to the belt with a collar. In an accident she could be flung forward, the collar will stop her at the neck but her body will still keep going. I think that could easily break her neck. Again, I don't mean to scare you but a harness is much safer whenever you have to take her in the car. |
I have a carseat and it was one of my best purchases. I feel so much safer for the dogs and for me because I know they are safe and comfortable and I'm not distracted. |
Food-when I got Hallie (she was 2.5) and she didn't want to eat dry food either so I gave her canned food for about a week and slowly started adding her dry food to it and that seemed to work. I was also switching her food since she had been eating generic (really bad) food and I wanted both of them to eat the same thing. I think maybe I was lucky with that working but it might be worth a try. Car seat- I drove from Alaska to New York with my babies and they HAD to have car seats so I spent a fortune getting them great car seats and they LOVE sitting in them. I ordered them from dogbedsetc.com! They are like a doggiebed on top of a suitcase and the seatbelt hooks through the back. THey have clips to keep them secure in the seat. They are both in the backseat and they can see out the window and bark at all the bicycles and motorcycles ;) |
I totally agree Erin. This is why I took her with me, to get fitted for a harness. I also took everyone's advice and did not put her on the floor at Petco. Thanks. Kate Quote:

Kate-glad to hear that it's hot where you are  ...it snowed her last night! We ACTUALLY have a little bit of snow on the ground! GREAT! It's snowing right now too! Didn't have a problem with Baxter and food-he ate the food from the start (breeder gave him Eukanuba and that's still what I feed him). I am picking up a new puppy in about a month and when I went to see her the first time, the breeder said that it would be a good idea to soften the dog food at first because she is so little (she will be 3 lbs full grown-4 lbs tops). I wonder if finicky eaters have anything to do with being small..I doubt it though. I bought a car seat at Petsmart yesterday. The only thing is, after I got it home and installed, I don't see that it has a belt to strap the dog in  I might be missing it though. |
I bought Diesel a lookout carseat from Petco. He doesn't love riding in the car, but he is always ready to go when I leave. It has a strap that attaches to the D-ring on his harness. I love it even though he doesn't because I know that he is safe. Plus he can see out the window even though most of the time he just looks at me. :) Reagan :) |
Car Seats & Safety We have 3 little kids and a Hummer they love going for rides. When we got our first fellow (Max) I found a great car seat/back pack. I found it at www.DrsFosterSmith.com. We now have 2 seats but the seats are designed to hold dogs up to 20 lbs, so I can put 2 in one seat/back pack and leash the 3rd one when we are out and about. Max, Tommie & Sophies Mom |
i have had a tough time with gracie eating as well...will your puppy eat out of your hand or off the floor, because i thought it was the food she didn't like but she will eat it off the floor and out of my hand...one food she will eat...only when she is starved :) is Bil-Jac...she loves that stuff, and my parents dogs do as well...Another thingI just figured out was she will eat if her bowl is on the carpet!! Hmmm yorkies are just finnicky!! |
