Should a puppy be dewormed? Our breeder treated our puppy with some type of deworming medicine called Panacur before we brought her home at 12 weeks. When we told her that the vet had given her some oral deworming medicine at her first checkup at 12 weeks she was not happy. She said that was "poison" to the puppies and they didn't need any deworming medicine unless a stool sample showed worms. She checked a stool sample sometime before we got her, but we didn't have it checked at 12 wks...but will at 16 weeks. So...can the deworming medicine be harmful to the puppies and how often do they need it? The vet said something like every month. Should we take the breeder's advice and don't get the deworming medicine? |
Your vet is probably referring to either Interceptor or HartGuard.. I use Interceptor, which protects against various forms of worms including heartworms, once a month. I would rather pay than take the risks. |
If the puppy doesn't have worms then I would not give it deworming medicine. I would definitely not give worming medicine routinely every month. I think you probably misunderstood your vet on that one. Since the breeder already wormed him and, if the fecal check came out normal, he should not have been given another wormer. My Yorkies aren't exposed to others and I do not worm them. I do worm the mother prior to breeding and after whelping and I do worm the puppies before they go to new homes. I also use Panacur. Just had another thought - Are you sure your vet didn't give you a once a month pill for heartworms? Some of those also include a regular wormer. Heartworms are totally different than intestinal worms (which is what your breeder treated for). Heartworms are caused by mosquitos and, yes, you do give a pill monthly for this and it is recommended. |

If deworming medicine acts the same as an antibiotic, then yes it is not good to give if not prescribed or needed. If an antibiotic is taken when not needed, then when it really is needed it might not work. |
