? about Missing Link and Protein content Alright, so it has been determined that yorkie Puppies are ideally supposed to have 28% protein in their diet and adult yorkies are supposed to have 18% protein in their diet. I feed my yorkies Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers' Soul, which has 28% protein...right on the money. But, I also feed them Missing Link supplement, which seems to be the only thing that has helped with their dry itchy skin. The protein content of the Missing Link is 18%, although I am not sure of the serving size. Does this mean that they are getting too much protein in their diet? I know too much protein could cause liver damage. Any ideas?! |
Any ideas at all? |
I'm not sure, but Cali has a mild internal liver shunt so i keep her on lower protein diet. I currently feed her chicken which has 17% protein and Missing link. So far no problems. I also watch any treats I give her to make sure they are low protein. I hope someone can answer this question. |
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I don't think the amount of the Missing Link you put in their food would be enough to cause problems... Plus I don't think every last bit of the protein in the food or supplement is digested, some of it probably passes right though. You can always ask your vet to be completely sure though. |
Don't worry about adding the Missing Link - you're not doubling his protein intake. I can't figure out how to explain this - Let's say a cup of dog food has 18% protein, two cups also has 18% protein - so if you are feeding a Great Dane puppy 4 cups a day and a Yorkie puppy only a 1/2 cup of day they are still only getting a diet of 18% protein. I'm not explaining this well, maybe someone else can give it a try. |
