how much... My puppy gracie is 4 months old and i feed her 3 times a day and i was wandering what is the right amount for me to give her each feeding? thankss:animal-pa |
I'm sorry you didn't get your question answered. It really depends on her weight. The dog food packages usually state way too much food for their size though. Have you discussed this with your vet? I've always just gone by experience with mine. I hate to say anything, because they are all a bit different and some are more active, some are bigger, and some are picky eaters. |
I would continue to feed 3 times a day and give the amount recommended for her age and weight (puppies need more than adults so if you are feeding an adult food don't go by that guide, go by a puppy food guide). Then if you think she is too thin or too fat, you can increase or decrease the amount from there. They're just like people, some have a higher metabolism than others, some get table scraps (not a good idea), and some get more exercise than others. You should be able to feel her individual ribs under a thin layer of fat, but not see them. |

She is 4 months and is about 1.9 lbs |
What kind of food are you feeding her? She sounds TINY! If she isn't eating the food you put out for her, maybe she doesn't like it and you should consider switching brands or something. |
Science diet since it is what our breeder and others said to feed |
she eats alott her parents arent big at all about 3.5 4 lbs grown |
I free feed my 3 kiddos. I fill their bowl up about once a day when I see they've eaten it all but I've always free fed. |
That is funny bc I was just reading an article about Science Diet and why in the world vets recommend it. The first ingredient in that food in Corn, which a lot of yorkies are allergic to. Have you noticed her itching at all? Or does she have dry skin? If she has either of these symptoms, the corn in her food is likely the culprit. I would highly recommend switching her to a food that has the first ingredient as some sort of meat...whether it is chicken or turkey or something like that. My yorkies are picky picky picky and they LOVE Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers' Soul. The first two ingredients in that food are Chicken and Turkey. It is an excellent food. Other great foods are Merricks and Natural Balance. I would DEFINATELY consider switching foods to one that is more healthy for her. I also free feed my two. Although my little 12 week old puppy is hefty, so I am considering putting her on a feeding schedule. We'll see..... |
is science diet a good brand to be feeding my puppy ? I know they have corn or something which some pups are allergic to right?:animal-pa |

If you can't decide which food to switch her to, do a simple search on YT for "food." There has been countless threads started about it. I am positive you can find some good info. But those 3 I mentioned earlier, Chicken Soup, Merricks, and Natural Balance are 3 of the best. You also might want to consider the size of the kibble since your little girl is so tiny. I have tiny yorkies, too, and one reason they like the Chicken Soup is because the bites are really small and easy for them to chew up. I am not sure how big the kibbles are for Merricks or Natural Balance, though. |
Thankss alott:) |
Science Diet might be slightly better than some grocery store brands, but there are many brands that are far better. Yes, they cost a little more, but Yorkies eat so little you can afford to feed the very best. I would switch her over gradually to another brand. My Yorkies don't have any allergies to corn, but corn is a cheap form of protein that is hard to digest. Like others have mentioned look for a brand that has meat (not by-products) in the first ingredients and no corn. You won't find a quality food at a grocery store. You will need to go to a pet store. I use Nutro Ultra Puppy. She is very small so she should be eating approx. a 1/2 cup divided into 3 meals a day, but I wouldn't hesitate to feed her more if she would eat it because it sounds like some weight gain would be a good idea in her case. |
