Is it ok to get spayed while in heat? Sophie had a appointment to get spayed August 8 and she started to bleed yesterday. I called the vet and she will be spayed tommorrow morning. I have heard that some vets will not spay a dog when they are in heat. Is there a reason why? I am getting a little nervous. This is Sophie second heat and it was only 4 months apart. I thought we would be safe by making a appointment in august but I guessed wrong. |
Cali was spayed during her heat since they thought she had an abdominal blockage. I had a board certified surgeon do it since Cali was going to have a liver biopsy when she was gettign spayed due to high Bile Acid tests. I asked the surgeon if it was risky to spay her during heat and she said no and that she would make a larger incision to cut down on blood loss, I don't know how that helps but she was confident Cali would be fine and she was. Soif you have confidence in your vet and they do the presurgery blood work she should be fine. Good luck I will keep her in my prayers and you too as I know how anxious you are to get this over with. |
Thank you Thank you for getting back on my question. I have never met the doctor that is doing the surgery but the girl who answers the phone said she is very good. Like I said we had a appointment for August 8 but I don't feel I can take the chance of waiting until then because I also have a male yorkie. Sophie had hip surgery in june due to legg perthes disease so I can not take the chance of her having puppies. My vet is on vacation so he is unable to do the spay. Thanks for the prayers, isn't great that we have such a wonderful father we can go to in time of need. |

Vets prefer not to spay while in heat because there is more blood loss. Let us know how everything goes. |
I called the vet and they said sophie is doing fine. I can pick her up tonight. The doctor was not going to put her on a antibotic which kind of scared me, but after talking to the vet she agreed to do it. Winston is lost without her so we are excited to go get her. |
I've never had one put on antibiotics for a spay. I think this is probably unnecessary, but I do keep mine on vet prescribed pain relievers for a couple of days. |
I'm so glad she's doing fine! |

I agree, antibiotics should only be used if necessary. I'm surprised the vet would even prescribe them if there was no infection. |
If you have a male dog around she will still have the scent and they will try to mate... do not let this happen.. It could be disasterous. Quote:

So glad everything worked out and she is fine. I said a prayer for her, but didn't have time to post earlier. |
Sophie had a good night sleep. She is moving very slow today but did find a few kises to give me so I know she is starting to feel better. The vet did tell us that her hormon levels will remain high for a while and that I will have to watch Winston by Sophie. So far he is more concern with Sophie because he realizes she is not feeling well. It is cute because he just wants to give her lots of kisses and lay next to sophie. But Sophie just wants to be by herself so I have been seperating them. |
