Teeth Brushed How old should your Yorkie be when he/she gets their teeth brushed for the first time? I know they have to be knocked under for this and Diamond is about six months old and I didn't know if this was too young. I was also thinking of buying the stuff they have in Petsmart for it but didn't know if it was okay to do it now given her age of if I should wait. Does the toothpaste make them get sick? |
For actually teeth brushing, you want to start doing this right away. The younger, the better so they hopefully will get used to it and not fight you. For teeth cleaning, that is usually done as needed, sometimes yearly. That is when they would be anesthetized. Doggie toothpaste is different from human toothpaste and is okay (and intended) for the dog to swallow. I don't think dogs are supposed to get sick from the pet toothpaste, but I suppose you never know. I use Teeth for Life, which comes in a gel form that Sissy just licks. The theory is it blends with her saliva and coats the teeth, staying on until she eats or drinks (which isn't supposed to be 30 minutes after you give it). It is supposed to remove any plaque or tartar and help keep their teeth really clean. I have been using is daily for her (I actually brush her teeth once a week) and at almost a year old, her teeth look great. I've only ever seen Teeth for Life sold on internet pet stores. |
My vet said that actually brushing their teeth isn't crucial when they are this young - especially if they still have a lot of their baby teeth. It IS however important to start getting them used to you poking around in their mouth, handling their mouth, touching their gums with your finger, etc. as early as possible. This will prepare them as you work up to a toothbrush (or fingerbrush). You can even use the toothpaste on your finger to start out. The sooner you get them started, the easier it will likely be in the long run. |

I have been brushing Buddy's teeth since I first got him at 14weeks. I read all kinds of horror stories about a Yorkie's teeth and gums if they are not properly taken care of. We brush with doggie toothpaste and a childs electric toothbrush(battery operated) each morning. I then give him a Fresh Bite which has a whitner and parsley in it for the breath. He also chews rawhide the rolled kind that looks like a manacotti which he can not get pieces off. He just went for his 2yr check up. Vet said his teeth were in great shape along with his gums, so I guess it works. If this helps to keep him from having to go under it is worth it. Eventually he will need a dental cleaning but not yet!:D My daughter-in-law said she never saw a dogs teeth so white. Makes me feel good that I am doing the best I can for him. |

http://www.petzlife.com/ http://www.tobysnaturalpets.com/petz.htm We bought Petrodex for Angel since other members use this, but we haven't tried it yet. http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...=1153247503914 I've always wondered what would be best. The liquid you add to their water, sprays, gels, toothpaste...etc. I haven't really attempted to open Angel's mouth yet. |
My guy hates brushing!! But he loves chewing on those DENTABONES. Once in a while the sneaky boy will find a piece of Clorets (chewing gum) and gives it a good chew! |
