Thinning hair...??? One of my yorkies began to lose his hair about a year ago. The vet said it was allergies. I bather him in special shampoo but his hair is still so very thin o his trunk. I read about thyroid condition could cause this. Does anyone know about this? |
Hypothyroidism is not very common in toy breeds. Is he gaining weight without eating more? With hypothyroidism the area with hair loss is not itchy, as with allergies and other causes. Usually their sides, tail and back of the back legs are also affected by hair loss. A blood test usually shows a high cholesterol level, but there are specific blood tests to test for thyroid function and then they just take a pill if needed. Lethargy, cold intolerance, anemia, lack of stamina are also sometimes seen. |
I have an appointment at 3:00 to do the blood test. He has gained weight but not too much. His mother is an overweight dog though. Is that hereditary? |
I have hypothyroidism and it actually made me thin so I guess every situation is different, but weight gain is more normal. I feel so much better now that I am on Synthroid. My dad also has the condition so I would think it is hereditary. Let us know what the blood work shows. |
I took Jacque to the vet for the blood test. They said they may know by Friday. He went from 4lbs 9oz to 5lbs 2oz. He does sleep more than the others and when it is cold out he starts shivering just at the mention of the word out. They say it is a very treatable condition with just a pill every day. So we'll see how it comes out. |
Hypothyroidism is no big deal when treated. I would much rather mine be diagnosed with that than diabetes, cushings or addisons. We'll hope he doesn't have even that though. Keep us posted. |
