Average cost of spay procedure? (and opionions needed) So, when I moved my dog, Britney to Philadelphia, I transferred her to the vet where my other dog has been going. She was very interested in having Britney spayed, so I asked her to figure out how much it would cost me.. she mailed it to me today... between 500.00 and 600.00! Does this sound right? When we had both our family dog and cat spayed.. I know that it couldn't have costed over 100.00. After reviewing all the charges, it looks like they charge for every possible thing (disposing needles, ecollar, etc.). How does this sound? Is not spaying a small dog such a huge risk? The procedure itself, and the risks invovled with it, is very scary to me as well. Thanks, Kyle |
Yes, that is WAY too expensive for spaying!! Why don't you try the Humane Society.. they do it for like $50. Some people think that the Humane Society would be more dirty...etc.. but I don't believe so. If you want to go to a vet specificially then maybe you should find a different vet because those charges are ridiculous!! |
Ask your friends which vets they use and call and get another quote. That's ridiculously high. Here is would be under $100.00. |
Oh yeah btw, my vet charges $150 for neutering, which is about average I believe.. |
Around here, with the blood work and pain meds, etc... it runs between $200.00 and $300.00. omega |
Omega that's comparable for around here also. I don't reccomend the Humane society, they typically will use a less expensive anesthesia. Yorkies need Isoflourine or Sevoflourine make SURE the vet you are using uses one of these two. It doesn't matter how cheap the spay is, if you lose your dog doing it. One option is to see if you would qualify for a low income spay/neuter voucher through your animal shelter, then you can use a good vet, and have some of the costs defrayed. They don't pay for the pain injection or pre anesthesia bloodwork...both of which I reccomend. |
I just talked with my Vet last week and he charges $42 for full blood work and then $160 for spaying. $202.00 doesn't sound too bad, is it? |
That sounds extremely high to me. My vet was more expensive than the standard because of the pre-op blood work and pain management after the procedure, but everything total was still under $300. |
Wow, I feel a little jipped (sp?) by this vet.. whom I liked very much. Thanks for all the suggestions.. I think I am going to ask around and get price quotes from different vets that I get good recommendations about. I also expected it to be around $200-$300. No one knows of a reasonably priced vet in the Philadelphia area do they? Thanks everyone! |
That is way high! It is $110 here. |
Friends of Animals My parents used Friends of Animals for neutering their cat cost them $25.00 with the Senior discount. Normal cost for dogs male $54 female $75 you can use your own vet if they are on the list. The website is friendsofanimals.org phone #800-321-7387. |
Since I am originally from VA (I go to school in Philadelphia and am here for the summer), I am debating about going back to VA and having Britney's spaying done with her original vet. While I am def. not interested in looking for a bargain, they only charge a total of $135.00 ($55.00 for bloodwork and $80.00 for the procedure). My family has used this same vet for many years.. and he has spayed both our family cat and dog in the past years. I am still really nervous about him doing something on a dog that is so small. I already know that he uses Isoflurane, that is the safest type of anesthesia, correct? Are there any questions that I should ask him? Thanks! |
I would ask what type of sutures (internal/external/staples) and whether you will need to bring her back for removal. Also whether they keep your baby overnight (mine did because she was so small) following the procedure. Since you already know the type of anesthesia and the pre-op blood work and cost, I can't really think of anything else. I would also have your vet evaluate if there are baby teeth that need to come out so you can do that at this time rather than a separate anesthesia. |
I just got one of mine spayed for $80.00 and included extra pain medication (if needed). So, I think you probablly could ship your girl to CA, have her spayed, and ship her back for less $$ !!! That sounds WAY to high to me. Were they giving you the "worst case senario"?? Suz |
In Philadelphia its mostly under $100. Its a little more for females than males. ;) |

That is a crazy price. With blood work and all my vet charges 80.00 + blood work about another $30.00. Maddie had to have 2 small hernias removed and getting fixed at the same time and its no where near $500.00 |
Sure! what area do you live, and how far are you willing to travel? |
I live in Center City so the closer the better since I don't have a car. I probably will end up just getting it done in VA with my original vet unless I get good recommendations for somewhere here in Philad. |
I lived in Orange county, CA. I just had Lacey spayed last month and my total comes up to 381.00, that is with blood works, cardiac monitor, anesthesia, post-op meds |
It cost me 250 for my sharpei my chi was a hermephatite (male and female) that cost me 700 my yorkie came spayed |
Wow, my toy poodle was 200 and the cat 150. That quote is insanely high. |
The vet I go to now charges btw 100-150, but it doesn't inlcude blood work. I think that's a decent price but wouldn't mind finding something for less ;) |
there is a spay clinic i was going to use its charging $55 they are running the clinic for 2wks as part of a statewide thing to spay and nueter pets should i not use them? i have been reading this thread and now wondering if i should just try and afford my own vet i dont want to put snickers in harms way.... |

Some of the vets will tell you $75 but then when you get there say, by the way, its a good idea to do a blood work up to see if she's in good enough condition for the anesthesia and that will be extra. Then when you get ready to take her home, they say, oh, did you want any pain medication to take home for her? The NE is higher but $500-$600 for a routine spay is surely not the going rate. Let us know what you find out. Good luck.:aimeeyork |

Kahlua was Neutered on August 1st in Lafayette, LA. Its hard for me to give you a total cost because he also had teeth pulled at the same time, so I'm not sure of some of the costs that may have or may have not been included if he were just getting neutered. But, his castration (neutering) was $95. Then it looks like another $90 for anesthesia, surgery packs, and surgical fluid. Hope this is still some help to you. |
Roxy was spayed, microchipped, had 5 baby teeth removed and stayed overnite last week and the total was $221.00. I'm in NE PA. |
