Separation anxiety... what to do! Here's the story so far... I just moved out my parent's place where I had a wonderful Bichon Frisé, and thought I couldn't live without a dog, so I bought a Yorkie 2 1/2 months ago. My baby is a wonderful boy! Never barks, listens pretty well, gets along with humans and other dogs, he's just amazing for his young age. BUT! He suffers from separation anxiety! He can't stay alone for 5 minutes without starting to bark and cry like hell and non-stop! I've read a lot on that desease, and can't figure out why he's acting like that, except that he's maybe too attached to us... I've tried ignoring him for a couple of minutes before leaving, also ignoring him when I come back until he gets calm, I've tried using the crate or not, nothing will do... He has toys to play with, I also got him a Kong toy. I've left the TV on also. First day I left him alone my neighbours wanted to call the police...!! My temporary solution is to bring him to my parent's place, since there's always somebody home and also another dog. Anybody has similar stories? What did you do? I want my baby back home... :( |
I'm sure he misses you. But, he may just be lonesome and would appreciate any companionship. I don't suppose you want another dog, do you? My pup has never cried or whinned when I have left him -- but, on the couple occasions that I penned him up (in the same area) while I was home, he had a fit. If I'm home, he wants full run of the house. However- when I go to work - he has never known anything different than being left in the kitchen/laundry room area. And - this has always been just fine with him. Perhaps my success is that he started out this way as a very young pup. Plus - he never has been much of a barker, whinner, or crier by nature. I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Snickers had terrible separation anxiety when he was a puppy. If I went out for 20 mins and put him in the crate, he would panic and have diarrhia. He would cry and jump up and down incessantly. I'd come home to a huge mess and had to put him right in the bathtub. When he was housebroken at about 6 mos., we began giving him the run of the house while we were gone. This helped somewhat, but he would still jump and scratch at the windows and doors while we were gone. But when we brought Baxter home, he changed completely! Having the company of another dog gave him the security he needed, and it hasn't been a problem since. Good Luck! |
My Tinka tends to bark when she is crated and I am at home. Once when I went upstairs to take a nap she barked for over an hour. I guess she just wants to be with me - but sometimes I need a break! Having another pup does seem to help - she's not as bad when Kaya is in the room with her, even if they are crated seperately. I know she doesn't bark when I leave - I never hear her as I leave or come home. So, she knows when I'm home and wants to be with me. Maybe you pup is just lonely. omega |
I purchased a plug in called Comfort Zone. I think it help. It is a plug in with a small bottle attached that omits a scent like the mother dog gives off to her off spring! If he is confined in one room it might help. Just keep the plug in in a plug where he can not get to it. I found it in the Foster Smith catalog. Petco & Petsmart also carry it. You can not smell anything but the pup will.:) |
