Taking my Yorkie on the plane with me as carry on? Hello my mom and I are planning a trip to walt disney world at the end of August. We started out and booked our trip based around Mickey my 1 1/2 Yorkie. A lot of arilines alow dogs on the plane as a carry on and they can sit infront of you. My concerns for this is the air pressure. My vet said he would give me a slight dose of seditive or whatever its called to calm him down. The flight will be about 2 and half hours. Another thing is if we did bring him we would be going for 12 days so we can do the parks slow since he would be in the condo in his cage. I dont know if it would be better to keep him home in the kennel which is his vet. They have their own run and they only allow 6-7 dogs and only their clients dogs. I dont know what to do. If we did leave him home we would cut the vacation down to about 7-10 days depending. Any advice would be great I only want whats best for Mickey. I'm scared about bringing him on the plane but on the other hand I dont want to leave him. :( |
:yorkietal Welcome :yorkietal First of all I would like to welcome you to Yorkie Talk. If Mickey is going to have a ride under your seat, then all should be well. You will have to purchase a ticket for him -- and I would do that in advance to be absolutely positive that there will not be any surprises when you get to the airport. If I understand your post correctly and Mickey will be locked in a crate all day in a strange condo -- that doesn't sound like much fun for him. I would avoid taking him to a kennel. Is it possible to have a house/pet sitter stay at your home and take good personal care of Mickey? |

Going on a trip for that long - and spending so much of the time going places where he can't go with you - plus it is always nice to really feel "foot loose and fancy free" when you visit places like Disneyland - with no time tables, etc., I would be tempted to leave my pup with the vet. Since you know he will get good care while you're gone - I can guarantee that you will miss him a lot more than he is going to miss you. I left my dog for the first time ever (she was 5 years old) once when I went to Mexico for a week. I missed her so much, but I am positive that she was a lot more comfortable staying at home. And, she was excited to see me (ecstatic) for about 10 minutes when I got home, and then she treated me like I had never left. Everything was quickly back to normal as far as she was concerned. Good luck - hope you have a great vacation! Carol Jean |
Hi and welcome to YT. This is such a tough decision because it is hard to leave our babies. If you feel comfortable with the vet, then I would probably leave him there since being in a crate in a strange place does not sound like any fun for him. The place ride would probably be okay, but if he fusses you are not allowed to take him out from under the seat or out of the kennel, and you have to pay to take him on with you and register/pay in advance. I went to Hawaii for two weeks when I had Sissy just two months. I wasn't expecting to get a puppy as soon as I did (the original plan was after the trip). I was fortunate to have two very good friends who kept her for a week each for me - so I know she got lots of love and attention. She has also been kenneled for a couple weekends, although I wasn't really happy that that experience even though the kennel is beautiful, clean and at my vet's office. I'm leaving again next week for a few days and my neice will be staying at my house. Though she works and Sissy will be in her bathroom for a lot longer than she is used to, I just feel better about this arrangement. You need to go with whatever you are most comfortable with here. Hope it all works out well and you have a great time at Disney. |
Check with the airline that you're flying with - some (Southwest for one) don't allow pets at all. I know United, Northwest and JetBlue all will allow pets as carry-on, but you have to pay for them ($50 to $80 each way depending on the airline). We're taking Jaxon with us at the end of July - flying Boston to Seattle! It's a direct flight though and we're flying at night so hopefully he'll be ok. I would prefer taking my dog rather than leaving them, regardless of the kennel. You just have to plan in advance, especially if you're staying in hotels, etc. Hope it works out! |
Check with the airline first. I usually fly US Air and they allow me to bring Diamond but I have to pay $80 EACH way and she has to sit under the seat in her carrier/crate. You are not allowed at any time to bring her up on the seat with you. I thought $160 was A LOT to take Diamond with me. I have a really good petsitter here in Virginia that takes care of Diamond on weekends when I have to fly home and when I drive, I take Diamond with me. Where do you live or where would you need the petsitter? I am sure there is a petsitter in your area. Try www.petsit.com I used it to find my petsitter and most of the sitters come with high recommendations from other clients and some are even licensed. Good Luck! |
My 8-pound 3-year-old yorkie has been on the plane three times. The first time when she was 10-month old and the last time was just two months ago. The first time we flew AirTran and I paid $120 for a round trip ticket [DC-Dallas(TX)-DC] for her. The second and third time we flew Delta [DC-Dallas(TX)-Louisville(KY)-DC]. With Delta, I paid $50 at the airport for each leg. I paid Delta a total of $150 for each trip for my dog. I had shot and health records for my dog but no one asked me for them in all three trips. During plane take-offs and landings I had to put the bag underneath the front seat but I bent down and lifted the bag up a little bit so my dog would not be scared of the strong vibrations. After that I pulled the bag out from underneath the front seat and put it right between my feet and no one said anything. I gave my dog a little bit of chicken and rice and water at Atlanta airport while waiting to change plane but I gave her some NutriCal on the plane. She was fine and I did not have to give her any medicine to calm her down. I understand in Disney World they have hotels where they have dog kennels for your dogs during the day time when you go to the theme parks or sight seeings (I don't know how much). Kathy |
I'm in the same situation as you are, but I don't have the decision to take my babies. They simply can not go with me. Anyways, I know in my heart that leaving them behind is in their best interest. We wouldnt be at the hotel hardly at all except to sleep, and how fair is that to them. At least if you left them home at your vets, they can run and play and get attention from the workers. So my advice is to keep em at the vets. |
I just flew yesterday with my nanna and she only had to pay eighty dollars with delta! |
