Help for my 15 year old yorkie It's 4:22 a.m. and I have been up all night with my 15 year old yorkie. he has been hacking and coughing all night, he was just able to cough up a tiny bit of phlem, but he sounds awful..sounds very congested. my husband is working night work and wont be home until 7:00 and I need to be at work at 6:30. is there anything I can give him to stop the cough until my husband can take him to the emergency vet? im wondering if its a cold or allergies? should I not let my 14 week old yorkie around him? |
Oh I'm sorry to hear your baby is not feeling well. I don't have any suggestions but to keep him/her comfortable. Good luck! keep us posted. |
Hi Yorkiemom2, Sorry to hear that ur baby isnt feeling well, as in the above post i dont really know what u could do best apart from keeping him warm and comfy.... please keep us updated and let us know what the vet says :aimeeyork |
Hi Yorkiemom2, My baby Nina had a terrible cough days ago - we went to a dog't birthday party and someone gave her food that was maybe too hot irritating her little throat. She was coughing so hard, that it let her to vomiting. I actually took her to the vet because of the vomiting and the vet told me that her problem was the coughing. The vet recommended that I give Nina Robitussin DM (dextromethorphain) as needed using a seringe. For my puppy, who weighs 6.8 lbs, the proper dosage was 0.6 ml. I asked about side effects and she told me I should only expect sleepness. For her upset stomach, the vet recommended Pepto 0.3 ml 2-4 times a day as needed. I hope your puppy feels better. If you are not confortable with giving him Robitussin, I recommend that you see a doctor. :aimeeyork |
Thanks for your replies. I had to come in to work for a 7:00 a.m. meeting, but as soon as my husband got home at 6:30 he drove him to the emergency vet. Right now they have Rodney in the back getting some x-rays of his lungs. It sounds like they are full of fluid when he tries to breath. The odd thing is, he sounded and acted perfectly fine last night right before I put him in the bed with me. As soon as he laid down, he started the coughing..The waiting is the hard part...I feel helpless sitting here at work and not being able to be at the vets..Keep your fingers crossed.... |
Update While my husband was at the emergency vet, the vet called me at work to tell me that Rodney's trachea had collapsed. That they had to sedate him and put him in a full body oxygen tank. This is because he didn't get sufficent air all night and he needs to get oxygen back in his blood stream. Please keep us in your prayers... |
Your family and Rodney are in my prayers . Hope he will be better . |
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that :( . Thank goodness Rodney is getting the treatment he needs! Nina and I will keep him in our prayers. |

Im just worried that this is too much for him. He is 15 getting ready to turn 16. I knew just by how he was acting that he was very sick. The vet told me that he would send Rodney home with a sedating medicine, so we can keep him sedated. Is this what is very best for him? I lost my other Yorkie Dusty 2 years ago, and I'm not ready to let Rodney go...even tho, I know Dusty is waiting for him at Rainbow Bridge. |
Omg Im so sorry for Rodney. I will have you both in my prayers. Please keep us posted. Poor little baby. I guess that keeping sedating is best for him. I assumed that if he keeps coughing that will aggravatte his situation. |
As long as he makes it through this, I will keep the sedating medicine at my house in case this ever happens again...i think it went on too long in the middle of the night and he was deprived a lot of oxygen. when we bring him home we have to seperate him from our 14 week old yorkie (Diesel). Diesel will get him excited and it wont be good for Rodney.... Sorry to talk so much, I just need to talk to someone. Thanks for listening... |
Yorkiemom2, i wish i could do or say anything to ease ur mind, but remember the age and tripple it by 6 i know we are NEVER ready to let go of anything that we love and cherish, i am hoping and wishing for a speedy recovery for ur baby and for u to stay strong, i know its nerv recking! Im not sure if saditing him is good? i never had the oppertunity to try that, i would have done anything possible just to keep her with me, but we have to be fair and realistic also, mine had a bad heart and fluid on her lungs.... What ever happens... WE ARE HERE FOR U!! Keep us updated? |
Mandy, Thanks!!!! I know I have to be realistic and keep his quality of life in mind. I would never keep him sedated all of the time 24/7. From how I understand it, they will give me the medicine in case in happens again. What the vet is confused about is that he has never had the collapsing trachea problem before and is suprised it is showing up so late in life. Nonetheless, I will do what needs to be done to make him better...It's amazing how much love we have for these little fur balls. I have re-applied my make-up three times at work already...Today is not going to be a good day.... Thanks! |
Bless your heart! I sure am hoping and praying Rodney will be all right! |
