Spay questions

Ok, so I am very nervous about having my baby spayed. After reading about the recent tragedies with routine spays, I am hesitant. I worried incessently with my bichon female and my maltese when they were spayed (more so because she was way smaller), and of course did not know all the right questions to ask, and with the Maltese, all the pre blood work was done, yet I did not feel at ease until the vet called when she was out of surgery and ok.
I am going to make an appointment soon, and have already discussed with vet about the bloodwork and whatnot. But I am confused about the pre-anesthesia painkiller, and what type of anesthitic. Is Isoflourine the recommended one and why have I read that people do not recommend having a pre shot of painkiller? Is it better for these little ones to just get the post op meds for pain? What type of barbituate is not good? What should she have for pain meds? Just want some more questions to ask the vet. AprilLove is still under 3 lbs, I want her spayed because it is the right thing to do for her health and I believe in keeping the pet population down. I don't want her to go into heat but I want her to be as big as she can possibly be before we do it. I love her sooo much. (I had thought strongly of getting a male just because the procedure is so much less invasive and my male bichon was barely affected by his neuter, in fact he took his own stiches out!!) But I am SOOO nervous! She will be my smallest furbaby going through the spay, the maltese was a little over 4 lbs when she had hers done(10 years ago) and she was 6 months old. Geez, can someone help ease a furbabys moms mind?? :-(

I was a nervous wreck when Gypsy got spayed about 2 weeks ago. Unfortunetly I have not taken her back yet due to health issues with myself. She made it through fine and seems like it was nothing. She was 3 lbs 3 ozs. My vet knew I was so nervous and she even gave me a hug afterwards to help me calm down
When I got to the vet's afterwards they let me get her out of the holding pen and hold her till they took the iv out. We were so happy to see each other!
Spaying is the thing to do, talk to your vet about your worries. They can talk you through them.

April Love,

Hi, I'm in MN too! You have asked a lot of good questions and I have some of the same ones since my Tinka will be getting spayed soon, also. I hope someone with some experience in this will write with some answers.

I hate asking the vet a lot of this stuff cause they sometimes treat you like you shouldn't even know this stuff or be concerned cause you're not the "expert." Or they feel threatened somehow - I don't know.

Where are you in MN - if it's ok to ask. You can PM me if you want.

Hi Omega,
I am west of the Twin Cities. Still fretting over the spay. Still looking at why people don't recommend pre-anesthitc barbituates, my vet recommends it and they do small breeds.

An overdose of barbituates will kill your dog. Pentobarbital, a type of barbituate, it often what is used to anesthetize animals. Pentabarb is just as dangerous... Even the slightest overdose can leave you without a pup.

My vet use Ketamine, which is a fast acting, non-barbituate anesthetic, and then once the dog is sedated they're intubated and started on Isoflurane gas.... Isoflurane or Sevoflurane gas is best. There's less chances for complications than with other anesthetics.

We use a low dose of Rimadyl for post surgery pain/swelling managment. Seems to work well enough, neither of my two had any problems after their surgeries.

Edited: Pixie was 5 1/2 months and barley 2.5lbs when I had her spayed. Everything went perfectly!

My little Holly was six months and 1.5kg--3lbs and a bit--when she was spayed two months ago. Like you I was nervous about it. My vet and the vet nurses were great. She had the pre-op blood work done,a IV line so her blood sugar didn't drop too low and a breathing tube. The vet said although she was the smallest dog she has spayed, she was one of the easier ones. They kept her warm after the op. and cuddled her and wouldn't let her home until she was eating--that was later the same day.I asked for post-op pain meds.
We went in next day for a check-she had only 3 stitches, then a week later to get them out. I had to get a headcollar for her as she tried to bite the stitches.
She recovered beautifully. She was sleepy for a couple of days and crab walked for the first day, then was running around as normal. I am so glad to have it all over with! The sense of relief aferwards was tremendous!

Good luck with your little one! I am sure she will be fine.

Thanks everyone for the info. I guess I just needed to hear some success stories.
