So worried... We came home this afternoon to find Penny not herself. We forgot to feed her 1st meal, and so we offered her food. No reaction. Food is one of the joys of Penny's life, and she could care less. Then I noticed she is extremely bloated. Her stomach is huge and so full. We took her outside where she did both. Then she drank just a bit when we came in. She's not herself and acting mopey. I called my friend who's a vet tech for advice - we didn't want to take her to the emergency vet for gas but didn't want to overlook something awful. She suggested just watching her for now, not allowing her to eat and monitoring water intake. If she vomits or has diarrhea or gets to wear she doesn't want to move, then we need to take her in. If she's still having problems, her dr. will be in at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning. I'm just so worried! We've never had this problem, and we've scoured the house for anything she could have gotten into... and came up empty-handed. The only thing she even could have had access to was a glass of soda on the nightstand. She's never drank from our glasses, but technically she could have gotten to it. I really doubt it, though. Anyway, just wondering if someone else has been through this. Just looking for some reassurance and comfort, I guess. |
Penny All you can do is watch her...she may have an upset stomach to some degree..best wishes... |
I've probably got myself all worked up now, but a google search for "dog bloated" brings up some serious concerns. One symptom is "air licking" which she has been doing for about a week. I know the internet can provide information that doesn't apply, but now I'm scared. |
Sometimes a bloated tummy could mean worms. I would just watch her tonight and wait until in the morning to take her in to see the vet. My little Hootie (9 weeks) absolutely LOVES her food, too. Her tummy is rather bloated, but I think she is just fat :p Hopefully it is just something like this or a result of her "air licking" and not something serious. She may be just tired and full and not feel like eating. Maybe she ate while you were gone. Personally, I would not withhold food or water from her...she might have a hypoglocemic attack as a result. I would treat everything like normal, giving her food and water until tomorrow morning then take her to the vet. It just isn't a good idea at all the withhold food from these little guys. If she has an upset tummy, you could try giving her some plain yogurt...it is great at settling their tummies. You can give it to her plain, or if she is on hard food, you could mix some yogurt with her hard food. Please keep us updated and let us know what the vet says in the AM. |
i hope she is okay!!! let us know how things go! |
I have no advice, but wanted to wish her well. I hope by morning she is back to herself again. |
good luck Im very surprised the vet tec said not to take your dog to the vet immediatly Im not saying it is bloat but it is a very serious problem look it up on the internet and best of luck. |

I'm just watching her closely now. Hopefully it handles itself, but no sign of progress yet (2 hours now). She's going in first thing tomorrow morning if this continues. |

I believe she said to monitor rather than rush Penny in is because she hasn't vomited, no diarrhea, etc. It did seem to take her a bit to start going #2 last night and today. She's been lying here next to me since we got home. Every so often, I see if she'll get up and move because my friend said if she gets to where so doesn't want to move she needs to go in. |
Is it very hot in KS today? Sometimes the extreme temps will take their toll, too. Try some Nutrical or Pedialyte just to make sure hydration/sugar levels are good. |
Yes, it's 95 here today. She hasn't been out except to use the bathroom, though. I won't walk her on hot days. |
I hope Penny is ok! Maybe she will be ok in the morning!!! :ghug: Keep us updated! |
Sometimes when my sister dog (chi) won't eat she ask sicks and has to go out to go the bathroom 15 hundred times...She may just have her stomach upset where she didn't eat...If she doesn't act better tom. I would take her to the vet. Hope she feels better, keep us updated...:) |
UPDATE: We went to the vet this morning. Around 3 a.m. was rough. She was so uncomfortable, and she just wanted me to cuddle with her at the foot of the bed while she licked my arm nonstop. I know she was hurting. This morning the bloating was better but still there so I called the vet and left a message. 9 a.m. she wants to go out and then she wants to EAT! Hadn't heard back from the vet yet so I called in. Her dr. wanted to examine and monitor her before she ate to make sure everything was ok. Turns out it's probably another bout of her colitis but in another form. The bloating was all but gone (isn't that typical?!!) so he recommended going ahead with her prescription food and just monitoring her for now. Her gums gave indication of some nausea. He said the air licking can be from a nauseous stomach or even allergies (which she has). The nausea makes sense because one night I gave her a bit of food when she wouldn't stop air licking in case her tummy was upset, and it helped. So, nothing really serious. Dr. said that gas in her colon and intestines like this can be very painful, though. Thankfully, she seems to be on the recovery! Thank you all for the kind words last night. I was really stressed with the situation, and I appreciate everyone who offered advice and even just replied with well wishes. |
