Hypergylcemia Is there an age or wait when you don't have to worry about your yorkie getting hyperglycemia? |
I read in a Yorkie book that they can get hypoglycemia until they are about 7 months old. Now I don't know ,if it can be longer or not but my Cassie had an episode and I give her nutri-cal or you can give Karo syrup. She just was spayed and I give her it to her everyday now. I worry to death about this condition. I give alittle less than a teaspoon. She doesn't eat very well. |
I assume you mean HYPOglycemia...I don't mean to be nit-picky but the difference is huge. Hypoglycemia usually corrects itself as the puppy matures and is long under control by 8-12 months. If there is an underlying medical condition then that is a different story.... Karo and other simple sugars cause a jolt of insulin to be dumped into the blood stream to deal with the sudden high amount of sugar and can actually worsen the condition because it only lasts a short period of time. Then, they bottom out as insulin lasts longer than the sugar.. It is so much better to work to get the dog to eat some kind of nutritious food and eliminate the need for the sugars. Nutri-stat or Nutri-cal at least has some fatty acids and vitamins while Karo has zip except for sugar. I would suggest research about the condition and maybe if it continues, have liver studies done on the baby. Liver shunt can cause these symptoms as well, as diabetes... Hope your baby is fine and will outgrow any problems.. |
Help with Shylah and eating I can't get Shylah to eat on a scheduled basis. Plus I really don't know what she likes to eat. I don't think she cares for the Royal Canine puppy food, which the breeder gave us, plus I think it is contributing to her skin rash. She did try Starsky's Nutro Lamb and Rice and ate a little of that. I can sometimes get her to eat the Ceasers moist food, but I want her to be on dry. What else should I try? And how do I bring it into her system. I am thinking of going to get the puppy Nutro or is there something better out there? I need advise. Starsky wasn't this difficult. No problems eating and he is a big boy. Shylah is tiny and I don't want her to have a hypoglycemic attack. |
