What to do for constipation? I've got a 10 week old female Yorkie which I just brought home 2 nites ago and she had a constipation problem this morning. I took her to the vet and got a $287 bill. They simply x-rayed her and gave her an enima to release the stool that was partially protruding. I tried to pull it with my fingers at first, but it proved fruitless. The vet said the cause is the "Hill's Prescribed Diet Canine T/D" maintainence bites as it's really for adult dogs. The seller gave me the sample T/D and said she likes them 3 times per day. Vet says they cause constipation. Vet also suggests I add in a bit of canned dog food with the Nutrience brand puppy kibbles. I would rather just moisten the kibbles first and serve only kibbles, but unsure if it will help alone? Also, how much is the right amount of kibble to serve per day? Package suggests 1/3 cup per day. Your help is appreciated. |
I think she also needs to be on a quality puppy food, Merricks, Nutro Ultra - look for one that doesn't contain meat by-products and corn - skip the grocery store and go to a petstore. Yorkies eat so little you can afford to feed the best. Canned pumpkin (without the spices added) works wonders for constipation. If your looking at suggested feeding on an adult bag it won't be accurate for a puppy (they need more). My bag of Nutro Ultra says 1/2 cup to 1 cup for a puppy 10 weeks of age, 3 pounds. I'm sorry you had such an expensive vet bill over a little problem, but start giving her a teaspoon of canned pumpkin with her meals and the problem won't reappear. I also don't like giving canned and would just moisten the dry. |
I took a look at the ingredients in Puppy Nutrience since I have never heard of it. It looks fine. It mainly has chicken and rice which is easy to digest. It does have corn, but unless your dog has allergies to corn (none of mine ever have) than it looks fine. |
Nutrience Lacy's Mom, Thanks for your responses! I will try moistening the Nutrience kibbles first before attempting your recommendation of canned pumpkin to see how it works. Regards. |
Lola has had this happened to her. Our vet sold us a laxative that comes in gel form. It is great because it just softens her poop, doesn't make it runny. It is called Lax'aire. |
