Foods our beloved Yorkies should NOT eat. This came up in another thread, so I figured I would ask so that a list of "DO NOT EAT" foods can be compiled. What foods ARE NOT to be given to our beloved Yorkies? Chocolate Grapes/Raisins And from this link: http://www.resq4paws.org/dangerousfoods.html Please add any others that you can think of. Dom |
onions |
Pork products is on the list and is not one that most people thhink of, but i had a puppy get sick from eating ham and refuse to eat. He became hypoglycemic and we almost lost him. Avoid bacon and other pork products for yorkies. |
This may not qualify as a "food"...but it is something that you don't want to Yorkie to come across while going on a walk. Sago Palm tree seeds. http://yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4692 |
I'm just curious, how credible is that information from the link dom posted. It does not say how or where they got that information on that page or who got it (if they are credible). |
There are many foods that dogs are NOT suposed to eat on those lists and Im sure that Im not the only one who has looked through the list and said "hey,my yorkie has eaten that LOTS of times".Those lists are great info but in my experience they exagerate things quite alot.Garlic is supposed to be poisenous to dogs, yet I know people who give their dogs a clove of garlic every now and again to keep the fleas away..Chocolate is also suppsed to be very poisonous, but in reality its not as deadly as it sounds (Dark chocolate is what you have to worry about).A dog would have to eat ALOT of chocolate for it to be fatal.Im a chocoholic and always have chocolate around the house and both Lady and Jess have stollen huge chunks from time to time with no problems at all...at the most, milk chocolate will make them throw up (no I dont feed them chocolate perposly..lol).My mother in law gives her dogs grapes, she always has and when I told her that they were on the "no no" list she laughed it off.She has 5 dogs the oldest is 15 and grapes has always been one of their daily treats (I dont feed mine grapes..I never have). I think that those lists are good to have around but out of experience, half of those things arent as fatal as the list makes them sound. Liver is on that list too and both of mine have aways eaten liver treats, milk is also on the list and mine love it,not to mention yoghurts etc..pork to,mine LOVE ham! Also,Iv seen cictric fruits on a list too and mine love oranges, strawberries, pineapple.I also saw peaches on a list once and mine love those too.Jess has a sensitive tummy, but none of the above have ever afected her. |
what's wrong with grapes? Why are grapes bad? I gave my dogs a couple of grapes the other day (I didn't know grapes were a no-no) They LOVE pieces of apple, so the other day we had grapes and I offered everyone one- they all like them! That was several days ago and to my knowledge nothing bad happened to any of my dogs, but now after reading this post I am wondering... why not grapes? |
Not a bad mommy My dogs get chocolate on a DAILY basis. I do, why not them. I had my first yorkie for 10 years, he died when he was almost 15 and was always the picture of health. He got two mini pnut butter cups on a daily basis. My two yorkies that I have now get the same. I had a toy poodle that ate an entire large bag of oreo cookies, other than the runs, he was fine. Like anything else, moderation is the key. The boys also love garlic salami and teriyaki beef jerky. |
dogs can have white chocolate, and have no problems. There is a bakery inside concord mills in charlotte NC that makes white chocolate covered doggie bones, and the dogs go GAGA over them, so not all chocolate is bad, but i would never feed mine light or dark chocolate |
My two yorkies love grapes - only one or two are they allowed - what's the problem with them. chocolate I had heard of that I never give to my dogs. |
Dark chocolate is the one you have to watch out for, though I don't think anything sugary is good for them. Their little teeth are weak enough without us adding sugar to the mix! |

My vet said the 3 things we had to keep away from Bella was Onions, Chocolate and coffee |
I must say my dog should have died, you know what he lived right as on happy as a bee.......lol he ate everything...from ice cream to chocolate bars...to cookies. He ate ham, hamburgers, Chicken, waffles, bananas, apples, even chewing gum...and even popcorn... So I don't believe in all this they say what your dog should not eat...they do tend to exagerate alot..I think whatever a person can eat a dog can eat it too...lol |
