Itchy dog..... I have always fed my dog Royal Canin for Yorkies. I switched to the Chicken soup about a month ago. Now Kitty is itching all her hair off. It almost looks as if someone has shaved her in places. She doesn't have fleas or ticks and nothing else has changed except the different food. Do you think it could be food related? |

there's a pretty good chance that it is food related. why did you switch her food? was there something wrong with the royal canin? i think you shoud start weening her back on the RC to see if her skin heals up |
I switched food because the only place I can buy the Royal canin is a 2 hr. drive and with 4 kids and 6 dogs I dont have the time to make the drive. I was wanting something that I could get closer to me. |

It sounds like ringworm to me. With ringworm you'll have areas that the hair falls out and your animal will itch. Do you or your kids have any red itchy spots on you? It is contagious but easily treated. |
could also be seasonal allergies. Ginger suffers from those and the only thing that helps is meds. |
It is not ring worm. I know what ring worm looks like. She doesn't have any red itcy spots on her. Her skin looks good. Her hair is short in areas where she can scratch. Since she is over 2 I would think that if it were seasonal allergies we would have delt with this before. The closest petsmart/petco is the 2 hr. drive I was talking about. I really think it is the food. My other 5 dogs are fine It's just Kitty with the problems. |
I should also add the vet gave me meds for allergies but they make kitty sick to her stomach. |

what kind of food do you have that are closer to you? |

It isn't ringworm Kitty. It looks like an allergic reaction to me. If the only thing that changed is the food it is probablly the food. I did think that maybe she is alllergic to what my hubby sprayed on the lawn since you have been over here with her a couple of times. If it has been going on since More than 2 weeks ago then it can't be the yard. Good luck! |
It started almost imdeitally with the food change. At first I thought she had fleas but I checked and she don't have any. I really think it is the food. I only tried the chicken soup since everyone on here really liked it. I am going to have to make the 2hr. drive for the Royal Canin. |

does the store you get teh chicken soup from sell Wellness too? i have my cat on that and he does VERY well. no more upset tummy |
The store I get the Chicken soup at only sells the store brand, Diamond and Science Diet. I can't order the food online since I don't have a credit card. That is why I have to drive the 2hrs. |
You could give your yorkie half a dose of childrens' benedryl to help with the itching. That's what I do when Sully's allergies flare up. Also, did you switch the food quickly or gradually? If you switch their food too fast they can also have reactions to the change. |
My daughters Golden Retriever has allergies to his food. Her vet put him on Wellness Brand food...He hasn't had a problem since....I would probably ask you vet what he suggests...I don't know if you have a Agway out your way but that is where I buy Sadies food...You can also purchase it on line..with gas prices so high it would probably be cheaper to buy it on line than to travel 2 hrs! Good Luck |
