My Puppies Stool I know this is quite the subject, but I'm concerned. My puppy is now 6 months old, and is 3.3lbs. Approximetaly once a week her tummy will make extremely loud sounds, and she won't eat until she goes pooh. This will take all day, and she is never herself. Once she goes, her stool is pretty much a glob of mucous. I contacted the breeder who is certain that she has a parasite. I took her to the vet and they say she's fine and they found nothing in her stool - it was negative on parasites. Has anybody experienced this, and if so what happened? I feed her dog food only. She's been like this since I brought her home 2 months ago. She didn't like the food the breeder gave us (Canine Yorshire) so we switched to Purina Beneful which she loves. We also feed her Caesar's moist food in the morning and at night - she loves this too. For puppy class we'll bring Roll Over (food), it works like magic on the tricks. We've kept her on a timely routine. She's a very happy healthy puppy otherwise. HELP! Is my baby okay?!?!?!?!:rbyorkie: |
Next time your dog has mucus in the stool, get a sample of it. Place it in zip-loc bag and take to the vet. It can be refrigerated, also. Stop feeding the Caesars. It is junk |
Also, is your puppy pooping on a regular basis? If not, the pup could be constipated and that's what's causing the mucus...is there any blood? |

where Buddy picked up the parasite but he had one. Loose stools for 2months my vet said it was the food. After cooking chicken and rice and trying several different foods encluding sensitive stomach I went to another vet for a second opinion. Nothing in the stools but vet said could be a male parasite, they do not lay eggs therefore do not show up in stools. He wormed him and wallah, better in 48 hrs. He gained back the two lbs he lost and I stuck with the new vet. No problem ever since that was 6 months ago. Good luck |

To original poster: Did the vet Deworm your baby just in case? |
Yes, she has all her shots. Goes to bathroom regularly, and is not losing weight. She has a healthy appetite. I guess I should take a sample of her stool when there is mucous in it and take her to another vet. She's had all her shots, and then some, so I think one of them is the deworm one. I do apply revolution on her neck once a month (heart worm thing they have now). You mention that Caesar's is junk, why do you say that? What would you recommend. I'm a first time puppy owner, and I'm new to a lot of this. All the advice and help I can get is appreciated. Thank-you, |
Sounds like symptoms of ibs ( irritable Bowel syndrome). They have abdominal cramping, mucous bowel movements, sometimes blood tinged, diarrhea. Unfortunately there is not a "cure" for this only management of symptoms. There are medications and special diets, but usually takes several bouts of problems (listed above) and everything else ruled out before diagnosis. I might ask my Vet about this and see if he may start treating for this, IF, that is, he doesn't think anything else is wrong. Diet alone can sometimes cause this problem. It can be nerve racking. HOw about some Eukanuba puppy or Iams puppy and see if you see a change. THere are also alot more brands available, I just use these and have good results. |
This is exactly what I had to deal with when I first got TJ. He was 4 months old and the SAME EXACT symptoms. I was at the Vet every other day, with TJ or with poop samples. They never found anything in his poop. He was on Flagyl a handful of times (did nothing). He did another round of de-worming, just in case. Finally we had to change to a restricted diet. I selected IVD - Duck and Potato - wet and dry and that's it, for approx. 4 months. It seemed to make it better but did not stop it completely. Then we finally did blood work, the result came back fine except some levels (of I don't recall what) were VERY high and what could be interpreted from those high levels, were that TJ had a very high level of bacterial overgrowth somewhere in his small intestines and this was a form of IBD. We kept him on the strict diet, but we also started giving him a tiny bit of Tylan Powder everyday. That was the trick. Slowly but surely, NO MORE EPISODES. TJ has been good since November. He now eats Merrick wet and dry (chicken based). I give healthy snacks and treats (he loves romaine lettuce and raw green beans, Merrick bully sticks and beef taffy and chicken jerky), I use Zukes for potty training treats. I have still TJ on the Tylan powder, but we have been able to bring it down to every 5th day. The Vet says this is great and hopefully we can one day take him off, but also, that I must be prepared that he could flair up again and that could mean Tylan everyday again. But for now he is a happy little piggy, FREE from those nasty, painful episodes. Please PM me if you want to talk further, I am always here. I know how scary it can be, I was on pins and needles everyday with TJ for a long time, but what a difference the Tylan Powder has made for my little TJ. NIGHT and DAY difference!!! |
You're not feeding the best of dog food, Beneful or Cesars. I would switch to a better quality food like Nutro Ultra for puppy - no byproducts, no corn and no dyes, just good quality ingredients. Giardia doesn't always show up in a stool sample, but it does sound more like irritable bowel, if she's not having diarrhea (many stools a day). |
Thank you so much for all this wonderful advise. I have made many notes and will be hitting the pet store right away. I love yorkietalk.com, it's great!! |
