Pig ears The associate at Petco raved about them today. She has 8 dogs, and they all love them... never had a problem. Of course, I know better than to believe a pet store associate alone. So what's the YT verdict on pig ears? Are they safe for Yorkies? |
they are safe if you watch them like a hawk as they eat them. Little pieces can be ripped off and swallowed which is not good, or they can swallow the last bit when they are almost finished. Also pig ears are very high in fat and should only be given once a week as a treat. bully sticks, hooves, and marrow bones are probably a better idea. |
I believe pig ears are a kind of rawhide... and some dogs can't tolerate rawhide.... My parents beagle has gotten pigs ears for years without any problems, but then I've heard of some dogs becoming violently ill after gnawing on one for just a few minutes. So for some dogs they're okay and for some they're not! (My pup has had no problems with them so far). But like Kellie said - supervise your dog while they have one. You don't want them to bite off chunks that could lodge in their throat or stomach. |
Although my dogs love them, I do not feed pig's ears. The biggest reason is the Salmonella issue. If you do feed pigs ears, please use due caution and be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling them. I found one case where a lady's 11 week old puppy died from Salmonella after eating a pig's ear. |
When I got lexie the lady at our local pet store suggested that instead of pig ears to get her lamb ears  I bought her one and she liked it but I can't stand the thought of her eating those poor little lambs ears:eek: She could care less what kind of ears they are..:D |
only as a special treat. like after a trip to the groomer. |
I boarded my Alaskan Malamute with the vet and sent pig's ears, along with her food and toys. When I came back they returned all of them to me saying they were not safe to use because when pieces are swallowed they are not easily digested. |

Thanks for that piece of info. I will throw what I have away when I get home. Never thought of such a thing! |
My Yorkie bell has to take a chew to bed, she loves her chew...i do find them a worry though, she ate a bit the other day, and was really sick...i think that they are okay but just keep an eye on them.... |
I got mine pigs ear,the other week and Duchess and Mitzi-Mae both got diarreah, which i assume was down to the pigs ears. My other girl and 2 boys lovd them, but after reading this i dont think i will be buying anymore :) |
I don't feed them to mine because I'm afraid of them choking. I get the Better Then Ears & they love those! I recommend bully sticks or flossies over pig ears. |
