Please help!I think Dharma is in heat... Hi everyone, I need your expertise about dogs this time. This is my first dog, so I don’t know how to handle this situation. Dharma’s vet told me not to spay her at 6 months because she was too young and skinny (she weight 3.2lbs). He said wait until she is 9 months to do it, that way he can do her teeth as well. Every morning I comb her hair and brush her teeth. Today, while I was doing that I noticed her vagina was a little bit inflamed and there was a little bit of dry blood on it. At the beginning I couldn't believe that was blood but it was. The only emergency clinic close to me is an hour and a half away from where I am, so I decided to take her to Benfield at Petsmart. The vet in service told me that there was no way for him to figure out if she was on heat or not. Then, he told me to buy their preventive care plant so he can do some tests on her and finally spay her. He told me that the total including the plan and spay was $452.00; I thought that was too high. Then, a lady that overheard my conversation approached me and told me to go home and wait until tomorrow to take her to her regular vet. I guess I am freaking out because I have never been in this situation before, I don’t want anything bad to happened to her. If she is in heat, her vet was wrong then. What should I do? Will it be okay to spay her while in heat? Is she in pain? And if yes, what should I do to alleviate her pain? Please help me I don’t know what to do.:( :( :( :( :( :( |
Calm down, if she is in heat she will be okay, Lexie went into heat we thought about 6 months old, she enlarged but I never seen any blood, well she is 9 months old now and in heat, I saw the blood about 2 weeks ago and she is finally going out of heat...I would wait till she came out of heat to have her spayed. I maybe wrong and I am sure someone on here will let you know(not meaning that to be a smart...but in a good way) Just make sure she isn't around any male dogs for 3 weeks..she will be fine...:) |
Sounds like your little girl may be in heat. If so, you can just keep a careful eye on her and let her go through this heat (without getting pregnant), and then spayed her and get her teeth done soon after that. Of course, you don't need to buy the plan that the vet mentioned - and you may want to visit another vet just for peace of mind. I'll bet you probably have nothing to worry about....especially, if she is happy, feeling good, and eating and going to the bathroom normally. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Thanks Thank you so much for you prompt respond, I greatly appreciate it! specially after being worry all day long. I think I will follow your guys advised and wait until she is out heat to spay her. I will definitely keep her inside for a the next three weeks. You guys don't have any idea how much your reply means to me, now I can go to sleep knowing that what she is going through is normal and as long as she is acting normal, which she is, she will be okay. Good night! and thanks again. :p |
Your vet will wait until she is out of heat to spay her (3 weeks). Just don't let her come in contact with any males. She is not in any pain whatsoever. I would go ahead and wait until about 9 months like your vet suggested so you can remove any baby teeth that haven't properly fallen out. I would also suggest you have the blood work done to show if there will be any problems with the anesthesia. Make sure your vet doesn't give a preanesthesia barbituate and uses a safe anesthesia for small dogs like isoflurane. |
