Hooves? I saw a member with a pic in her post of her tiny baby chewing on a hoof. I saw these hoofs in Petco. Are they safe for Yorkies? Penny has problems with rawhide so bullysticks are her only bones right now. I'd like to be able to mix it up for her, but I want to be sure whatever I buy is safe. |
The dogs love hooves -- I hate them, they stink big time, so needless to say the Yorkie kids don't get hooves. What I have found the absolute best in safe chewing is a beef shank bone. I have the butcher cut a beef shank in 3/4" slices (like little round steaks with a "marrow bone in the middle). I use the shank to make a beef stew or some soup, and the clean cooked bone goes to the doggies. The bones do not splinter, and I have never ever had even an aggressive chewer even put a dent in one. The bones look like little donuts and they are all over the house :) No stink, no slime, no mess no chocking hazzard :D |
Baby loves her hoof. It doesn't stink too bad. It's by Merrick's and it's barbebue flavored. It smells good at first, but then the smell gets to ya! :p |
I've always had a bad impression of the pig hooves - we had a welsh corgi when I was younger and we left him to chew on it one day while we went out - came home and let me tell you - you've never seen such a mess! He had thrown up at least a dozen times! Poor guy... I guess it depends on your dog... |

I have a pasture in my back yard with horses.... My dogs go over the the farmer's shed area and steal hooves all the time. These are the ones that he has trimmed off his horses. Then, of course, they bring them home and chew on them for days. We've never had any problems with them. They are hard as a rock - wonderful for the dogs to chew on - and apparently they are very high in calcium. Carol Jean |
2 Attachment(s) Are you talking about my little one loving her hoof!? My breeder gave me that hoof.. and I feel much safer with her biting the hoof than bully sticks actually. Because Hoof is really hard and they cannot really get much out of it at time.. Bullysticks are good too, but I just get worried if she hurts her throat or something by going at it too much :D :D :D When I give bullysticks, I supervisors her every second because she is small. |
I allow the dogs to chew on hoof trimmings,my ferrier comes out every 6-8 weeks and I scoop up all the trims. I check them over and make sure there are not too small and the kids love them.:Puppy2: |
LOL -- I guess I am a very mean mommy! My husband is our farrier and when he trims, Boo the Boxer will sneak the shavings when he files, but I toss the trimmings. |
Stinky Hooves Well i've learned since being on YT that rawhide is BAD for dogs, so out they all went. I am looking now for bully sticks to purchase. In the mean time I purchased a hoove, gave it to the dogs. Not a second thought until while watching a movie tonight on our couch. I started to smell something REALLY stinky, looked around and the dogs were chewing the hooves. I picked that up and EWWW it STUNK so badddddd. I threw it away immediately. What can I give them that wont stink? PLEASE HELP. I get sick with that stinky smell. I must be a mean mommy to throw away stinky toys but it's gross to me. |
Michiko - I believe it was your baby going nuts for the hoof that inspired my search for information. She's such a doll! So, do they actually eat the hooves or just chew on them? I was reading the info on the hoofs in the link I posted above, and it says "More than 62% digestible protein." Only 62%?? :eek: :confused: |
The "real hooves" that my dogs get from the farmer's yard - have absolutely no odor at all. The ones you buy must have had something done to them to cause them to smell bad .... that's unfortunate -- because they are great for dogs to chew on. Mine have chewed on them for years. They just keep bringing them home. They do have a lot of protein and calcium - but, I like them mainly because they aren't bad for them, aren't dangerous, are good for their teeth, and give thems hours of fun just chewing away!
