I, personally, believe it's because this so called "good food they feed their dogs" company puts them through colleges and sponsers them. Then as an add on they get commision for selling it.

I was recently checking a customer out(I'm Front end supervisor (for Michaels) and usedto work for Petsmart as a pet specialist and well whatever dept they wanted to put me in anyway. But this customer of mine was complaining about how her pug shed so much( she had a painting of the pug in her hands) . I asked her what she was feeding him and she said "science diet." I said "it could be because of what you're feeding him. The first ingrediant in Sciene diet is Corn. You want it to be some form of meat product. and then the following two either be meat or rice." She said that that was what her vet told her to feed him. and I explained why the vet would have possibly said that. I then recommended two different dog foods for her to switch too or try and recommended her to switch him over in a course of a week by gradually intermixing the two foods together. (she haden't done that the first time, I believe she said.)

I must be the minority..my vet gave me ekanuba..I tried to say no thanks cause I knew I wouldn't feed it to Cali, but that didnt work out very well...

I Have Heard Time And Time Again That Vets Can Their Schooling Paid (or A Large Amount Paid) By Science Diet, If They Sign A Contract To Sell And Promote Thier Food

How did the vet respond when you acted like you didn't want the food?!

I am now wondering what I am going to do with this big ole' bag of Science Diet that the vet gave me yesterday. I could start using it as "treats," but it would take years to use the whole thing! Maybe I'll share some with my sister and mom and let them use it as treats as well. Any other suggestions on what to do with it?! :confused:

It can be donated to your local humane society. They will usually take whatever they can get and at least SD isn't the worst food out there.

You can give it to a dog shelter .

from one who worked in a couple vets offices, (me), Science diet is a good food that is a higher quality affordable food for those who are only able to afford food bought in a supermarket. its better then purina, but not as good as the higher quality foods you can find at petco and onilne. Vet's promote is alot mostly because they sell the prescription diet version (i/d, w/d, r/d etc) in their office for dogs with certain problems. Also Hills promotes themselves ALOT to vet's office all over the country. They give discounts to vets offices. Of all the vets offices i've worked at, volunteered at, visited, NONE of them get a kick back from Hills, sure they can get a discount whole sale price, but its usually just for the PRESCRIPTION diet, not the regular science diet. None of them had hills pay for their schooling or knew of anyone who had their schooling paid for by hills. Everyone always thinks this because Prescription/Science Diet is always recommended by Vets. THe last vet i worked for always promoted Solid Gold, Nutro, and Wellness before Science Diet. It makes me angry that people always jump at their vets with these kinds of accusations. I've worked for them and wanted to become one. i know alot about the ins and outs, and most of what people believe about them is wrong. I'm not saying there aren't lots of vets out there who are in it for the money (i worked for one of those too and quite shortly after training) and don't care as much about the animals then their money, but there are also a lot of good vets out there.

My vet actually recommend that I feed Rocky Royal Canin or any of the Nutro (Max, Natural Choice, or Ultra). He said that Science Diet did not agree with his dogs, and he said that other clients had said same. I just recently changed my cat's food from Science Diet to Royal Canin, and I have noticed a big difference in her fur, activity, and her she gobbles down her food now.
