So i've narrowed it down I went to petco yesterday to pick up something for my cat, and ended up looking at all teh dog stuff instead LOL! I think i've narrowed it down to three foods and i would like my puppy to be on one of them. The breeder feeds eukanuba and bil jac, but i'm not a fan of eukanuba and i can't seem to find bil jac. So i would like to put my puppy either on Wellness, Royal Canin puppy bites (switch to royal canin for yorkies when she's older), or Solid Gold. I was sure i was gonna put her on Wellness because that's what my cat eats but I have to go on a hunt sometimes to find it because petco doesn't sell it. petco does however sell both royal canin and solid gold. Which do you think is the better food? And is anyone's dog on the Royal Canin for Yorkies? Is it better then regular Royal Canin? |
Sadie eats Royal Canin for YOrkies & LOVES it. |
anyone else have an opinion about these foods? |
I use Royal Canin also...but some won't eat it....have tried both puppy and adult for yorkies. Cindy posted this somewhere and it's very useful...the biggest problem that I have come across is availability of certain brands. The Bil jac is a favorite for pups just starting out with solid food since it breaks down very quickly on contact with moisture and eliminates choking hazard with pups that are trying to figure out the whole chewing...not gulping thing. If you have a Cosco nearby the Kirkland is a good choice at a great price. Start with a grade of 100: 1) For every listing of "by-product"1) For every listing 2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points 3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points 4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points 5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewerâ?Ts rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points 6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points 7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points 8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3points 9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 morepoints 10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points 11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points 12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points 13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isnâ?Tt allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points 14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnâ?Tt allergic to beef), subtract 1 point 15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point Extra Credit: 1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points 2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points 3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points 4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points 5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points 6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points 7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points 8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points 9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points 10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point 11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point 12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point 13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point 14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point 94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D 69 = F Here are some foods that have already been scored. hmmm, well Wellness is a 110 and regular Royal Canin is 106, LOL both good foods, and i'm sure solid gold is up there as well. hmmm, well since both royal canin are at petco, i'll go with one of those. i'm leaning towards royal canin i think. |
I am a big believer in Dick Vn Pattens. I feed it to my pit bull and she has a healthy coat, solid look and she went from an overweight 56lbs to 44lbs solid muscle, and now I'm feeding it to Peety, my Yorkie, because natural food assist with hair growth and coat shine. |

It's at Petco and it comes in a bag for all life stages. Every site I have been to, Dick van Pattens' has gotten the highest rating. Quote:

You can request free samples of RC foods if you join "My Royal Canin" on their website. If I were going to feed my dog kibble, it would probably be Chicken Soup, Natural Balance or RC..... |

I feed my babies Innova (Tiger is slowly switching to EVO) and Merrick wet dog food . . .both are really great  Unfortunately, they are NOT available at Petco. But I think if you have an upscale dog store in your area, they might carry both as that is where I get them. |

Petco has high quality kibble as well as Petsmart. Also the local canine commissary has Innova and Canidae. No need to go upscale for a good dog food. Quote:

in order to find wellness and innova in my area i have to go searching the internet for stores in the area then call them to make sure becasue sometimes they don't carry them anymore. i had to go two towns over for both the innova and the wellness. |
sorry, just seemed like you were trying to be a goodie two shoes and I took it the wrong way. There is no upscale or downscale when it comes to doing what's healthy for your pets. Different dogs react to different kibbles and if that's what you gotta feed your dog then that's that. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Quote:

Actually none of them are true "pit bulls". They are what we call mutts. They just look similiar to pit bulls. The world has become very uneducated about the breed and began to label anything with those looks a "pit bull". A sad and long story to tell, but a true one. Quote:

They are closely related to APBTs', and have the same drive and athleticism, but some are for show and true pit bulls are for go. Quote:
