adding eggs?? I heard that if you put a raw egg in with your dog's diet it will help your dog's skin and coat?? My mom has a border collie with dry hair and skin and was wondering if this would help. So is this true?? |
I think eggs are good for the skin and coat but I dont know if I would feed raw ones. I know they do that on a raw diet though |
I would worry about salmonela poisoning, so I personally wouldn't risk it, but I give Coco scrambled egg twice a week (no oil/butter/salt) and her coat is amazing :D |
So do you guys think I should give them the egg after it is cooked?? I was thinking about either giving them a scrambled or fryed egg. |
I think fried or scrambled would be fine. I fix Chachi and Jewels scambled eggs every Sunday |
I would try possibly a supplement or something before I would feed him raw eggs. I put Missing Link on Hobbs' food and it has done wonders for his dry, itchy, flaky skin. He doesn't have dry skin anymore! |
i give all three of mne half a boiled egg each every morning smashed up in their wet food. |
I would go with Missing Link or other omega 3 and 6 fatty acid supplements. Raw eggs will cause the coat to become worse because it leads to a biotin deficiency. Raw egg whites contain avidin, an enzyme which ties up biotin (makes it unavailable for absorption into the body). Symptoms of biotin deficiency include dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), loss of hair, and poor growth. |
We did have pills that she took and they helped alot but the pills were really expensive and for some reason she hates the missing link, my dogs like it though. She will probably go back to the pills but my mom wanted something cheaper that might work until she gets the pills again. And if we gave her an egg, it would be cooked like everyone suggested and not raw. Thanks everyone for the great ideas!!!:D |
I believe that dogs are not susceptible to salmonela poisoning (it's a people problem) --- and raw eggs are just fine for them to eat. Have fun! Carol Jean |
Eggs I gave my English mastiff a raw egg everyday and her coat was amazing!!!!!! I believe rule of thumb is wait until they are 6 months old before feeding the raw egg????????????? |

You are absolutely right. This is what I've been told as well...raw eggs are a no-no. I remember feeding them to the dog we had when I was a kid...guess we're learning more and more about our dog's diets and what's good for them Cooked eggs are good only as a treat and not as a regular thing....also, from what I've read, dogs are susceptible to salmonella poisoning. |
