Bailey's Nails Are Too Long. What to do? We took Bailey to a groomer and she could not control him enough to trim his nails. You would think the world was ending. I took it on myself to work with him. He is pretty good with me but I found that even clipping a tiny little bit on a couple of nails caused him some pain (nerve) and some bleeding. I know all about the physiology and he will let me work with him, etc. My question is: I think his nails are too long (I hear clicking as he walks across the floor.) How to get his nails shorter (gradually..weekly?) so they eventually are normal. It seems the blood vessel and nerve continue to grow as the nail does so if left untrimmed it becomes harder. Any and all advice humbly accepted. your friends, Samc and Bailey |
Me tooooooo Sully's nails are too long too! Agh, I tried trimming them once myself and I cut one too short and he bled all over the place. I can't handle hurting my baby again, but we've got to do something. He scratches us when he gets in our laps! |
a great "maintenance and file down" system that i use is to simply walk them on concrete/asphalt......... it files down their nails pretty good, min you toby's nails are still kinda long, but tey will go down gradually...... i have also heard of cutting the a little bit every couple of days so it goes faster, but i prefer the walk method (its much more fun for everyone that way :p ) |
OM...maybe you should try the nail filer, buffer..donnou the name for sure...Thank God Mojo does not give me a hard time...i use a nail cliper and will be done in no time. I also suggest you talk to him during the nail cutting :) and make him associate this wirh something pleasurable. |
How often do you trim? By the way, the pavement walking is good, we do that almost every day but his nails are pretty thick all the way to the ends. Seems like the blood vessel and nerve are right there. Thanks, SamC |
Just make sure you buy skyptic podwer (sp??) to stop any bleeding...even if you do cut it too much, i don;t think it will give you serious problems...but go slow, do one nail at a time...maybe cut 1 nail today, another tomorrow and two the following day and so on.. I usually cut Mojo's nails monthly. |
Another tip,, that is VERy helpful,, When he is in my lap,, I rub his feet alot and in between his pads,, Ive done this since he was little, and they get used to it, so when ya hold their paw to trim his nails ,, he could care less. ;) |
