Eat Poop For some reason, Miffy eats her poop when I'm not looking or when no one's home. It's very distressing. She's actually doing fine with potty training. She knows where to pee and poo and when I watch her, she'll do everything correctly. I don't know how or why she eats her poop or what triggered it. Will someone give some advice? |
My Zoey does that too... just wait until you find a piece in your bed or shoe or on the sofa... all places Zoey likes to hide while she is dinning on poop! My vet said that it is normal and just to pay attention to it and clean it up right away, to which I replied "sure you want me to come home from college during the day to see if there is any poo okay. My teachers would really love that..." From the people that I talked to they all say the same thing that it is a phase and she should grow out of it. Just keep an eye on the poop for worms and she should be fine...But if you do find someone who knows how to stop them from eating the poop please let me knowtoo...the worst thing in the world is when I come home, Zoey wants to give me a kiss on the face and it smells like poo yuck!! Meanwhile Zoey gets her teeth brushed like three times a day... Amy & Zoey |
Bella was doing that too, so I got Deter at Petco and starting giving it to her Wed and yesterday was the 1st time she wasn't eating her poop. It's a pill and I cut it up into 5 pieces since it says 1 tablet per day per 10 lbs. She eats the pill no problem since it must not taste bad!! |

Yep, totally agree with you. Moose won't do it as much as your zoey, but sat evening I was working in my room and she was nowhere to be found and sure enough she's in the den having a snack. Well the rest was taken quickly and she was given a dog breath mint and no kisses for the rest of the day. I didn't have to deal with it with lil bear she's a princess and would not think of doing something so nasty. So you say a phase, huh? |
I read on the web that putting meat tenderizer helps. It makes it nice going in, but really stinks coming out. Anyone heard of this? |
One underlying cause of this behavior can be a deficiency of certain B vitamins. These are manufactured by beneficial bacteria in the dogs large intestine but cannot be absorbed from there. It may therefore be helpful to supplement the dogs diet with brewers yeast tablets or powder, which are rich in B vitamins. I would advise you talk to a vet first before doing anything. S/W |
http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/stool_eating.htm read this article :) my little oreo was doing this and there was nothing missing in his diet because he was on innova. but i did buy these pills called Deter and they are working fine. |
Yorkie Girl, we bought the Deter pills and started them last Wed and as of yesterday Bella wasn't eating her poop anymore. They worked for us too. Are you still using them or can you eventually stop them? |
im still using them it's been 1 week, only because Oreo did eat his poop once i had to increase the dose lol.. but so far so good. |
well I am not sure if I picked it up or if Sydnee ate it, I was trying to multi task as usual and couldn't remember. Haven't caught her at it but I am going to go get the pills for preventive measure. Do it before it becomes a problem. Or will that harm them if they don't do it? |

My fergie eats our cockers poop if I give these deter pills to our other dogs will it stop fergie eating other dogs poop?????? Thank you in advance Fergies dad |
Not sure if someone mentioned this but the reason that puppies eat their poop as well as others is because thats what mom teaches them while she is taking care of her puppies. The momma dog eats all the poop to get nutrients for her nursing, as well as keeping the area clean for her pups! Amazing what a little motherly love does to you. :) But it is mainly just a phase most dogs go through. |
speaking of poop My Kiwi doesn't eat the poop but like to roll around in it. I let Kiwi run freely when I'm at the park and noticed she is rolling around like is the using the grass to scatch her back. Later when I pick her up her hair were covered in poop and it shunk like sh*t. So I have to give her a bath again. Crazy dog! |
Cure to the Poop Eating I brought Charlie home 2 weeks ago now, and have slowly been changing his food to Purina One Growth and Development. When i first brought him home my husband and I thought he never even went poop and we were a little concerned. After some dedective work and dog spying we figured out he was eating it! Now that we've fully changed his food he doesn't even look twice at it. He just does his business and leaves it be. FYI the breeder I got him from was feeding him Eukanuba. I say, if you're puppy is eating the poo- try switching the food. Maybe it's either so darn tasty he just can't get enough :) or it's lacking in some serious nutrients. |
