What do you do of extra food that your pup doesn't eat anymore? I have over 1/2 a container of food that I am no longer feeding Kona. Any ideas what I should do with it? |
What kind of food? Sissy has become picky and I'm trying anything - so I also have a few bags with very little out of them. I have Merrick Puppy (dry food) and Science Diet Puppy Lamb Meal (dry food). |
It's a horrible kind of food that my vet GAVE me. :thumbdown (Purina) So I don't want to give it to anyone who cares what they feed their pup. Should I just throw it away? |

Take it to a humane society or animal shelter...they will take anything they can get usually. |

PETSMART has a great return policy on food, even if the bag is open. Just save your receipts. |

Shelters in our area only take unopened bags of food. If u r not happy with the food, get rid of it and chalk it up to experience. If u don't think it is good, why would u give it to other pooches?  |
I sometimes have food left over for various reasons...kibble too big, shaped odd, dog refused to eat, upset the tummy of my girl with sensitive stomach...various reasons other than I just didn't like the food. Many times it was because my picky eaters didn't like the way the food was put into the kibble. We experimented a lot with kibble shapes around here before finding one JoJo would readily accept, which meant a lot of food left over. I buy my food a private shops and have it special ordered, so an exchange isn't possible. Our shelters work on a very limited budget and since I feed high quality food, anything is better than what those dogs generally get, whether JoJo and Biskie rejected it or not. I would like to see all dogs, including shelter dogs, being fed what I feed or what a lot of other members feed, a high quality, by-product free food, but financially that is just not possible. SO, IMHO, any little bit helps. I am sorry your shelters are not accepting of open bags. |
If I have food that my dogs won't eat -- I give it away - to my relatives, friends, or anyone who will take it. My sister's dog will often eat food that my dogs won't. Carol Jean |
i used to give it to our local shelter. but they closed.:( now i feed used food to the squirrels. the squirrels are happy that romeo is a picky eater!!! |
I had some un-opened cans of food - Jaxon just decided he didn't like that kind anymore. I took them to Petsmart and they let me exchange them for a different brand. I didn't even have a receipt! |
The humane society can always use donations. |

You might take the food to the local animal shelter. |
We usually donate food, shampoo, combs or anything else we have extras or don't use to our local Petco (who has bins in front of the stores) and these usually go to shelters. It's more convenient for us and it helps shelters. |
You could take it to a homeless shelter.. You could take it to a homeless shelter if local animal shelter won't take it. I think though like animal control would take it or county shelters that have less money than that of a private shelter org...I was thinking if they don't take it maybe a homeless shelter would take it.. I see many homeless people with dogs. |
