Swallowing things whole Hi, Recently one of my boys started swallowing things whole and choking. 3x in the last 2 weeks I have had to thump on his back to help him get it either up or down. One time I almost had to rush him to the animal ER b/c I didnt think he was going to get it up on his own in time. :( So he swallows treats whole, Ive started breaking them into little pieces so he cant choke on them. The other day he swallowed 1/2 a little rawhide bone when I tried to take it away from him cuz I didnt want him to swallow it and choke, so he purposely swallowed it. AND hes been taking mouthfuls of food and bringing them somewhere else in the house and dropping them on the floor and eating it. Is that normal? I mean 10-15 pieces of food in 1 mouthful. He also steals his brothers treat and walks around with them both in his mouth, AND he'll take one treat in his mouth and try to get another one w/o eating the first one. Why is he doing this? He has me really worried that one day he will choke on something and I wont be able to save him in time!!! This is NOT a food deprived dog! He has food out almost 24/7! Hes a little scab too, always begging! |

sounds like he had bad table manners. The only tip i can give you is for him taking big mouthfuls of food. What you'll need to do is find a object large enough and heavy enough to fit in his dish so that he has to eat around it and can only get the pieces on the side of the dish. this way he can't eat really fast, swallow pieces whole, or grab large amounts and run away. I do this with my cat because he likes to eat really fast and then throw up. Another option is getting a ball or cube with holes in it and putting his food in there so he has to push it around for pieces to fall out. this will also prevent him from eating large amount at a time. As for swallowing treats whole, the only thing i can tell you is to not give him little treats. get him big bully sticks and take them away before they get to be swallowing size (which would be the size of the rawhide he swallowed) Or you can just not give him anything at all for a while then ease them back in to his routine and see if he still does it. Or you can use his food pellets are treats. these are small enough that he won't choke on them. hope some of this helped |

I’ve seen that a lot in bigger dogs but not in one so small. Sorry, I can’t offer anything other than the obvious, keep small objects away from him and watch him when he eats. Good luck. :) |
