How much is to much I know a lot of you on here free feed. But I am not sure if I am giving my pup enough food, or if I am giving him to much. On average we feed him twice a day. Sometimes three times and give him a handful of food. Probably equivalent to 1/4 of a cup. Baci has gained 2 lbs in a month. And i know he is a growing boy but i just gave him more food bc he was licking his dish. And i gave him more and he ate it all! Any help would be good. |

if your pup is under 6 months i would feed him three times a day. you can usually go by the amount the bag recommends to feed him. while puppies are growing this is usually a good amount to feed. as they get older stop growing you can change the amount of food. also after 6 months you can go to feeding two times a day. with little dogs i don't recommend feeding once a day because they can get low sugar. Also i don't agree with free feeding. its hard to get them potty trained that way, so i do scheduled feeding. its helps with the potty training and it also helps them not to be such picky eaters. when they figure out that they only get their food for 20 minutes a clip they eat it up instead of picking at it. |
If you are truly concerned that Baci is overeating, I would take Baci in for a good thorough vet exam and talk it over with the vet. There could be an underlying health issue that is causing excessive appetite. |
How Much is too much :) We free feed our dog because he is under 6 months old. He usually eats alot of food in the morning and mid evening and nipples during the day. Stephanie |
Some dogs will pick at their foods, others will act hungry even if they are full. You can't base it on that! Loki always eats his food right away and always looks at me for more, but he's at the correct weight so I don't give in. How much you feed depends on their activity level, size, age, type of food and so many other things. No one here is going to be able give you the right answer. With an adult dog you can tell by feeling their ribs and making sure they have a waist. With a puppy it's harder. I'd talk to a vet. I found my trainer very helpful for questions like these that I felt silly asking the vet. But don't feel silly - that's what they are there for! |
