Three weeks old and gained a pound
 
Is it normal for a puppy to gain a whole pound in 2.5 weeks? The puppy I'm buying is "a little pig" according to the breeder. There were two in the litter and the other one died. It was sickly and smaller from the start. At first my puppy would push her off the tit so the breeder started supplemental feedings. Then the smaller one started having trouble with maintaining her body weight.
So is my little (big?) one going to be larger than normal? All grandparents and both parents have all been under 4.5lbs. I know there can be throwbacks but I'm thinking that she was/is getting more nutrition than the other one both invitro and after birth. When she starts on solid food and starts walking more will the weight gain slow down?

Just curious but I know Yorkietalk is the place to go for answers.

i was wondering ho fast was to fast as well. I got my pup 3 weeks ago and took him to the vet today and he has gained 2 pds in 3 weeks. He is 6 pounds and 4 months old. YIKES! The vet didnt seemed worried. But wanted to weigh the carrier to see how heavy the carrier was since i have weighed him both times in it.

How much does it weigh? Standard is up to 7lbs, and remember when there puppies they grow the fastest.

Are you sure he gained a whole pound? Did he have an empty stomach the first weigh in and a full tank the next go around maybe?

1 lbs is a lot to gain for a 3 week old pup. My little one was not even a full lbs at 3 months. She is now close to 5 lbs at 1 year 3 months. But you never know, sometimes their growth will stall for a while. They say if you double their weight at 12 weeks that will closely determine their adult weight. That didn't apply to Coco, THANK GOD, otherwise I'd have a 2 lbs pup..lol..but it seems to work for others.

Are you saying the pup now weighs a pound at 3 weeks...? It is not usual for a "singleton" to gain fast. It will get bigger each week until weaning...and around 8 weeks it should start leveling off.
A pup will only be what it is genetically programmed to be at adulthood...

I don't actually have custody of Adie (the puppy) yet. She is still with her mother at the breeder's house. I could post a picture of her that was taken on the day she was born, she looks pretty small, but I don't know how much she weighed. I guess I will stop worrying about it thanks to all of you. I'm so eager to bring her home!
