Food? I have an 11-week-old Yorkie who weighs 2.4 pounds. When I got her the breeder gave me a little of the IAMS and another brand. When I was at the first vet visit we got a free container of Purina Puppy Chow. Is that okay to feed her? Also how much and how often should I be feeding her? Currently I put about 1/8 cup out in the morning and an 1/8 cup out for dinner but she has been finishing that so quickly that I've given her a little more. I'll take whatever advice you have. i would not feed puppy chow. look for the highest quality puppy food so your pup gets the best nutrition for its growing body. ask your vet or someone at the pet supply for assistance. i feed chicken soup for the dog lovers soul dry kibble. i free feed and let him eat as much as he wants. |
Thanks for your help... I was getting concerned with reading these post about not feeding Purina... I asked my vet when I was there and she didn't say anything bad about it.... I'll head out to the store tomorrow to pick up something else. What should I look for when looking at ingredients? |
look for whole foods. i'm not an expert just learned from other yt members. check out dog food project. basically all the info you will need. http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ |
You will need to look for dog food that does not have any by- products or corn (some dogs are allergic to it)but has all natural ingredients. Also, I would not use eukanuba or iams, they do animal testing. Innova is a great brand to go with, ingredients are great and natural. |

Welcome and I hope you will love it here . . . a great resource of information. |
I've just got a puppy last week, he is now 12 weeks old, he weights 2.9 and we are giving him Royal Canine for puppies, he loves it! and for can food I'm giving science diet for puppies and he likes it too.:) |
2 Attachment(s) I feed Merrick's. Baby loves the Wing-a-Ling and the Smothered Comfort. They have whole wings and thighs! She farts up a storm on the chicken, but I can usually handle it! LOL |

Innova, and Nutro are great brands. I would not do Pedigree, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Royal Canin or Science Diet. They all have by products and some have corn like Royal Canin. Corn causes dogs to itch a lot and have allergic reactions. Whatever food you get, make sure all the meat is WHOLE. So as opposed to Chicken fat or Chicken Byproduct, you want Whole Chicken. You want the good ingredients like meats and veggies at the top of the ingredient list, because then you know they used more of it. |
Thanks for the info. Last night after work I went and picked up a package of Innova for puppies. The store also gave me a sample of Innova and Wellness. When I got home from work my boyfriend told me she hadn't eat much since breakfast so I mixed in some of the Innova. She immediately ate all of the Innova but left the Purina. She is a smart puppy! It looks like we found a winner! Thanks for all your help everyone. |
