Benedryl - I know this has been here b4 Sorry, but I've read all the old threads about benedryl and now I'm even more confused! My vet is having me up Gingers dose of Benedryl to 1 tsp 2 x's/day for the time-being. She said that 1/2 tsp was a pretty light dosage. It's the Children's Benadryl and the active ingredient in each 5 mL is Diphenhydramine 12.5 mg. I'm so confused by this thing, have been giving her 1/2 tsp. because that's what I've always been told. Could the vet have been wrong? Your help would be greatly appreciated! |
Gypsy is 3 lb and was given 1 tsp/Gremlin weighs more and was given 1 and 1/2 tsp. |
Wow! Thanks, I've been following the vets directions and it seems to be working out! Judy |
Sophie has been taking the same amount as Ginger and it is really helping her as well. I am so glad no more allergy shots. Wooo hooo! |
what is your pup being treated for? some particulars on dipenhydramine HCL, including overdose information.... http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/dihydram_ids.htm |
Me again. I hope everyone had a pleasant Memorial Day weekend! We're treating her for inhalent allergies...but I think something more is up. Her tonsils are swollen, and today she had ABSOLUTELY no interest in food, has been "shivering" several times (and it's HOT here), and doesn't want anything to do with me or my husband. She chose to sleep in her kennel, not with us. She's never done that before. So, I went to bed with her kennel right beside me, and slept restlessly, until, oh joy, my beagle-mix began throwing up! I spent an hour, and $55, on the phone with animal poison control (began to worry that the new wood polish I was using was poisoning them) and while I'm thrilled to hear that it's not the likely culprit, I've got two sick dogs with odd symptoms. My husband went online about midnight and spent about 2 hours researching their symptoms, and now we just have more questions....I may have said this before, but I'm at my wits end. If anyone sees this at this late point in the evening, please pray for us. I'll be calling the vet the minute they open. I plan on taking: bm samples, the bottles of pepcid and benedryl so they can verify that I'm using the right meds, the floor polish (can't hurt), and a typewritten list of events as I recall them. |
Wow I hope the vet can find something out. Its great that you are taking that much especially the list I know when I go in I tend to forget about 2/3 thirds of the stuff that was going on. My mother actually does this for herself when she goes to the dr. You may even want to write down specific questions that you want to ask as well. About the benedryl, even though you seem to have found the answer, our vet had us give it to our big dog for a snake bite and I remember thinking that it sure did seem like a lot, so dogs may be able to take more than people. Again I hope they both get to feeling better soon. |
Thanks to all for your help. We did make it back to the vet Tuesday afternoon. Both dogs were placed on Medrol and I was told to continue with the pepcid. By Wednesday morning, both were interested in food again, and everything has stayed down since then. Today and scratching and chewing stopped. The vet felt pretty confident that most of the problems were stemming from seasonal allergies. I still don't understand how that was the cause of all that throwing up though... I'm not sure what happens when the medicine is all, but for now everyone is feeling better. Thanks again for your input!:) |
