Odd Rash - Would like your opinion 1 Attachment(s) Hi Everyone, We had Punkin in for grooming today. After she was home for an hour I picked her up to rub her belly and I notice this round mark on her tummy. It's raised around the edges and looks like there could be little blood marks in the centre. I gave her belly rubs this morning and didn't notice it - but it could have been there. We took her to the vet tonight as a friend thought maybe it was ringworm. It's definitely not ringworm, but the vet said it was odd and gave us some cream and asked us to call in on Monday to let her know how it was doing. At that point she would decide if it needs scraping. Sooo...I've posted a picture of it. It's a little icky but I thought if anyone could help identify it, it would be YT'ers :) My husband thinks that maybe they injured her at the groomers - at the very least I would think they must have seen it. This is our first dog and only the 3rd trip for grooming so we're green on what could happen. I would really appreciate your opinions...I know there is a lot of experience here. Thanks in advance!! |

Sorry, should have read the whole post first! LOL Sorry, now I really don't know! ;) |
It's also strange how it's right smack dab in the center of her tummy! |
It almost looks like a burn? |
Oh poor baby maybe the groomer didn't clean the clippers properly. I would call them and talk to them. Since it isn't ringworm I am not sure what else it could be. Hope it clears up soon. |
mark Well, I have seen alot of marks on dogs as a retired groomer...but I would want to see the groomers set up to make a decision. Clippers burns are not round and perfect..they are ususally jagged and straight. Cicular blow dryer can burn the skin in that manner...but, the dog will move away and there is not enough time to burn the skin in a pattern...she would need to have been laying on her back quite still to burn a perfect circle...BUT if the groomer had her standing on her back legs and blowing her belly dry with HOT dryer it could have made that burn mark...but I hate to blame the groomer if I am way off... Some groomers have warm air blowing in one end of the cage and a circular exhaust sucking air out the other end..these outlets are round, but I have never seen a dog able to get their belly near one...totally a puzzle... A burn will clear up fairly fast with oinment...if it lingers, then I vote that it is bacterial infection. |
I know your vet said it wasn't ringworm, but I have experienced ringworm when my daughter was given a kitten for valentine's day, and it sure looks like it. I hope & pray for your sake it isn't. If you or your husband or anyone else gets a spot like that its ringworm. We all ended up with a few spots and took forever to get rid of. I would call and question the groomer, see if she my be able to shed some light on it...good luck :aimeeyork |
Definitely looks like ringworm to me - it even has the raised ring on the edge. |
I can't stop thinking about it - we seem to be more convinced that it's something that happened at the groomers. The vet told us to wash it gently and dry before putting the cream in it. While I was wiping it, the skin in the middle loosened and is starting to fall off and there is just normal skin underneath. The vet made the determination that it was not ringworm because the spot still has hair growing in it and apparently in ringworm that does not happen. It's a catch 22 - I don't want her to have a fungus or something that's impossible to get rid of, but I certainly don't want to think that she got hurt at the groomer's. She was not herself when we brought her home yesterday - too quiet and no tail wagging. Last night she seemed to come around more and today she's all back to normal. It's all sooo weird! |
After thinking about it last night, ringworm does look like with the raised circle around it but I was thinking maybe when the groomer was drying her she had her standing up against her and might have got the dryer on her skin. It is very strange, hope she is doing good, if she is acting normal today and it looks as if its healing I wouldn't worry about, but I would certainly watch and check her next time she goes to the groomers just in case..:aimeeyork |
I think I would be going to the groomers and looking for a hairdryer with a round tip and see if the size matches. I did find this on ringworm that says the hairs are broken and short, not that they're not there. Signs of ringworm are typically circular patches of broken hair in ring-like whorles. These areas usually heal at their centers, growing darker than normal hair. Surrounding this darkened area is a band of inflamed, reddened skin within which the hair is also broken off short. The most common areas for ringworm to occur are the face, ear tips, tail and paws. When these areas are examined with an ultraviolet light source the broken hair shafts often fluoresce. In the few cases where the lesions are itchy, the skin is crusty, bumpy and infected with bacteria. |
did they check it under the light?Rosi had a ring on her tummy but only the outer ring was red, i thought it was ringworm also and they used the light and tests... turned out to be an insect bite , but they had me treat it with Tresaderm ! Was gone after a couple of days ! |
It looks like a burn to me. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for having a look everyone :) We're still not sure what the darn thing is and frankly I'm obsessed about it. If she has a fungus or something - ick but at least I can get rid of that. If she was injured at the groomer's I'll be wild - accidents happen and I'm completely understanding of that. If they chose not to say anything I'll be even more wild. I left a message at the groomers - friendly and said I had a grooming question. No call back, I also called a few times later this afternoon and it always go to voicemail. :( I'm getting a bad vibe about all of this. The spot looks a lot better. The raised outer edges seems a lot reduced and not as red and the skin in the centre is coming off and the skin underneath seems to look ok. |
