Licking: no apparent reason Been a while since I have been on. Bailey started licking his right front leg. Vet checked......nada. No apparent sores, redness, etc. Seems like more of a habit at this point. Where he licks his hair is thinning slightly, other than that, I don't know. I have tried distracting him, interrupting, etc. Hasn't seemed to help. Any ideas? Thanks, Samc and Bailey:confused: |
...mmmh Maybe spray some bitter apple on it. That might help. |
dogs usually develop this behavior because they are bored. try givin him alot of other things to do. if that doesn't work, then you can try the spray bottle approach or a can of pennies. also spraying bitter apple on his paws might help. |
Licking: cont.... I will try bitter apple, but he likes just about everything, I am afraid he could look forward to it. (he is a very manly yorkie at over 9lbs) Boredom: Definite possibility. I walk him almost every day..long walks and runs, and he has a doggie door into a very interesting back yard with occassional cat, many birds to chase, plenty of toys. He is so attached to us that unless we are not there, it might be just a touch of separation anxiety. Bitter apple will be on the menu soon. Gracias!! Samc & Bailey:thumbs up |

Licking paws can be a symptom of allergies, but I don't know about leg licking. Aloe vera also works as a licking deterrent because although it is good for the skin and safe to consume it has a bitter taste. It could just be a habit like others have said. I don't think a dog necessarily has to be bored to have a habit. It's like biting your fingernails. |
Great article, Thank You!! I tend to think it is more boredom that has become a habit. Now that we are aware of it, we can take action to help him stop. Thanks again, Samc and Bailey;) |
Habits My brother's dog will do this when he is bored and left unattended to... Def try the bitter apple or the aloe. |
