Why does My Benji Itch? Hi. I am new here. I have a 4 month old boy - Benji ! I did lose a 3 yr old in January. Very sad story for later. My Benji is constantly biting at his backside and back legs -he's so itchy! What can I do for him? He eats Royal Canin puppy w/ leftover Eukanuba puppy in it mixed with the Caesars Puppy Wet food. Cheerios as a treat. His skin seems fine. I hear this is common in yorkies. My last yorkie was a little itchy here and there, but not on his backside. Any suggestions or poor little Benji? :aimeeyork |
some small dogs can be allergic to corn and wheat products. my best friends mom has a poodle that is. also have you checked for flees. i would ask your vet what he thinks and go from there. |
Benji's Itch Benji doesn't have fleas. But I will check the ingredients in his food. He goes to the vet next week and I will ask then. I just hate to see any of my babies scratch..I did order a stop itch shampoo and lotion from Fosters & Smith which should come soon. Thanks :) |
It possibly could be his anal glands need expressing. :) |
The change in shampoo might work. Hercules was itching a bit (I might have been being overly worried though), so I got some oatmeal shampoo and conditioner and he seemed to stop itching as much. |
What could it be? Itching could mean one of a few different things: 1. That your dog needs to express his/her anal glands. Every time a dog poops, they express thier anal glands. Your vet can do it for you for about $10-$15, or you can do it too, with rubber gloves, just stick a finger in his butt about an inch and press to the sides. It's gross, but it will help him/her. 2. OKAY - dont' freak out yet. Your dog could just have allergies! Our vet told us to give Sully a half a dose of children's benedryl every 5 hours for three days and it cured him! Allergies are very common in yorkies. My uncle's yorkie goes in once a month for an allergy shot, even. Hope this helps! 3. It's not fleas, is it? Make sure you've been giving your dog his monthly anti-flea, worm, etc. meds. |
My maltese was very itchy on Royal Canine food. She itched so badly that her topknot disappeared and eyes and chin began looking bald. I switched her food to Chicken Soup for the Puppy's Soul and add Derm Caps Liquid that my vet suggested, that stuff can work wonders for dry skin. I also add Solid Gold Seameal for added menerals and vitamins. Good luck! If it is allergies it can be hard to find the right food. Look carefully at the labels. My dog's pony tail is finally getting long again and around her eyes is filling in. Also want to add that my dog's skin didn't look dry or irritated, she just scratched all the time. |
Wow! Its all so confusing, this food stuff. It seems not every dog has the same reaction to RC food. I am going to buy the derma caps though. That seems to be the one thing everyone says helps. I will also ask the vet next week about the anal glands because he does drag himself sometimes, too. Thanks everyone..I am so glad I found this site.. :p :aimeeyork |

If it IS allergies, you need to change his food. Get him on a food that contains NO: corn, glutens (wheat, barley or rye), beef, dairy, or byproducts. |
