Vet Question I bring home my baby in a few weeks. I was just curious (and I'm sure the breeder will tell me and give me all the correct info.) but do I make a vet appt. right away after I bring her home? I know she will be up to date on her most current shots but do I get a schedule or something from the breeder on when her next shot should be? What is the time line of shots? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks! |
Yes you make the appointment right away. Some breeders only give you 48 hour to take them to the vet as far as their contact. When i picked both of mine up on a Friday I had a Saturday Morning appointment with the vets. You want to have an immediate well puppy check up. Your vet may or may not give shots at that time. |
I had to take my pup to the vet within 3 days for her health guarantee to be valid... You might want to check with the breeder to see if she has a similar condition. Depending on how busy your vet is, you might want to make an appointment ahead of time. (I normally have to wait a day or two to get an evening appointment)... She should also give you a record of his dewormings and vaccinations. Bring this to your first vet appointment. They'll take a look at it and determine what vaccinations your pup still needs and when they should be administered. Drs. Foster & Smith has a sample vaccination schedule you can check out. They mention lepto should be given with one of the combination vaccines though. Be sure any combo vaccines your vet gives doesn't have it... It's bad for small dog and has been connected to a number of deaths, but your vet should know that already! Be sure to post pictures! We all can't wait to 'em!! |
I would make an appointment so he can check her heart, knees, etc. even if she doesn't need any vaccines at this time. Your breeder should send you home with the dates and types of vaccines and wormings already performed. Also, I think that chart by Fosters and Smith is out of date. Most do not give shots until at least 8 weeks now, and then 12 and 16 and rabies not until they are at least 6 months and never lepto for yorkies. Only give kennel cough (bordatello) if you board your dog. Skip the giardia vaccine and lyme disease vaccine. Never give the rabies vaccine with any other vaccine. |
I would make an appointment now for the next day (or next business day). When I took Georgie for his initial wellness check up they gave me a timeline of shots and I just made all the appointments then. Congrats on your new baby:D |

I would make an appointment as soon as possible. I had 14 days to go to my vet. Alot of times they will pay for any meds if something is wrong with the pup if you go within the first 14 day you are home. Also, they gave me a puppy starter pack at my vet. It had coupons, food samples, treats and other training info. So i would advise go asap, and you might even get some surprises :D |
