Bad anestishia for spay or neuter? Does anyone remember what the names of some of the anestetics that are BAD to use to put your dog under for spay or neuter? I did a search and couldnt find it. But I will be getting Cindy spayed very soon. I've called around and one vet uses Iso flourine, another uses sevo flourine. Are either one of these bad? Thanks in advance for anyones advise on this.:) |

Thanks! I am just very worried cause shes 6 months old and right at 2lbs. I'm probably going to wait another couple of months just to see if I can get a little more weight on her. So, I have been just kinda checking around on the different anestetics and witch ones are the best to use. |

Yes, I agree with Kalina. I would feel safest with isoflurane, also no barbituate preinjection. |

Would her going into heat cause problems? I dont understand?:confused:Theres no male dogs around to get her pregnant. |
Both sevoflurane and isoflurane are used on humans. Sevo is the newer of the two and I believe is more widely used now.... Sevo causes less irritation to the airway and gives a faster rate of induction and recovery, but less iso is metabolized by the liver and kidneys. Here is an edited version of a study done by Oklahoma State University on inhaled anesthetics. They're BOTH safe for your dog... I'd choose the vet you you trust and are more confortable with. |

Thank you. That was very helpful.:) |
The surgeon where Cali had surgery said they usse the servo and CAli was fine. I to waited too long and Cali went into heat at 8 1/2 months. She ended up being spayed while in heat for other reasons. She was pretty unhappy when she was in heat. I would try and have her done before she comes into heat. |

How much did Cali weigh when you got her spayed? See... the only reason I was thinking of waiting a little longer is Cindy is only 2 lbs, and this really worries me. |
Cali weighed 4 lbs but had a lot of health problems so I was waiting to give her more time to get healthy. She ended up getting sick a week into her heat and they thought she had an intestinal blockage so the surgeon opened her up and did the spay and determined no blockage and also did a liver biopsy since her Bile Acid test indiated a possible liver shunt. They also did 2 intestinal biopsies since she had several stomach problems. She had surgery by a board certified surgeon who was going to be able ro do the LS surgery if necessary. Her scar was huge and she was in the er hospital 36 hours. She did fine though. I know how scary it is to make that appointment but if you have confidence in your vet all should go well. Also have the presurgucal blood work done. Good luck! |
