high white blood cell count... what does it mean? anyone know? something more specific than "an infection"? |
All I know is that 2 weeks ago when I took my Pom in for some sores she had on her skin I also had a senior blood panel done and the vet called me the next day and said her white cell count was very high but most likely from the skin infections. She was on an antibiotic for the sores and the vet said I should redo the CBC in a month to see if that's what it was from. Sorry that's all I know for now |
There are actually five types of white blood cells. The CBC only shows the total count. You can do further tests to see which type is elevated. Some would indicate infection or virus and an increase in others might indicate cancer or leukemia. The white blood cells themselves are not dangerous. It is just our body's way of fighting off infection so we produce more when we need too. So when a vet sees a high WBC he knows that something is going on in the body to trigger this. |
