Help with allergies Hi. My 6 year old Yorkie is always scratching. When he has fleas, he only has one or two. The vet put him on some medicine, because he said a fungus on his back, but that hasn't helped. I've changed his food to Purina, then Iams, but he is still scratching. We have tried the shampoos and they don't work either. Can anyone help me? Thanks |
Has he been tested for mites? Chachi was scratching and losing hair off of his back and my vet thought it was allergies. After taking a couple different meds and not improving the vet did a skin scrape and found he had mite (mange). He had to go through some dips but has been better every since and now his hair has all grown back. I would ask you vet to do a skin scrape and check for mites. |
I know what you are talking about! Mitzi was almost bold on her back and her paws. I first changed to home cooked food and it got much better but I was always worried if she would get all the vitamins and minerals. Purina and Iams are not the best dog foods out there and they contain corn and wheat which can trigger allergies. Just a few days ago I bought Eagle Pack Lamb and Rice Holistic dog food and it looks like she is doing good with it. My Vet also recommended "Physoderm" shampoo (the one for acne) and that helps also. I hope your furbaby is going to get better very soon! :aimeeyork |
Yorkies can be very sensitive to their food and their environment. I agree with Mitzi's mom. I'd find a food that has little or no corn in it. That seems to be the high risk ingredient. Mine nearly itched themselves bald while on Royal Canin which has corn in it. they can also be sensitive to cleaning products used on floors. I'd try some benedryl. My vet recommended 1mg per pound of dog. I also tried hydrocortisone spray. helps temporarily, but I wouldn't rely on it. Also try some soothing shampoos like oatmeal. The phisoderm probably works well, too. |
Thank you for helping out. My yorkie, Rascal, and I have been up the last 2 nights due to scratching. He is so miserable he even cries sometimes. I will try all of your suggestions and see what helps. Thanks again! |
I think if he is so miserable it would be best if you take him to the Vet asap and ask him to give Rascal a cortison shot! No need to let him suffer because the other methods will take time to kick in. Hopefully it will be better very soon, we pray for him!:aimeeyork |
Reuger was eating our outside dog's food, which contained corn, instead of his own food. I noticed that he was really biting his paws, very intensely. Well, I took him to the vet for allergies and he was put on medicine for about 2 weeks. Giving Reuger medicine was so funny!! But that's another story! Anyway, we finished the medicine (I didn't notice that it helped much) and then I remembered that they can be allergic to corn. I started keeping the dog food outside where Reuger can't get it. In a couple of days I could tell that he was better and after about 3 weeks he hardly bites at all. So I would definitely check out his food. |
My little beegee My Dog is scratching. The vet said it was ringworm and he did test and it was not. My BEegee skin scrapping. Can his diet cause this? He's on Science Diet, Lamb and Rice. He's wines and cry's! |

We switched Mitzi 2 weeks ago to Eagle Pack Hollistic Lamb & Rice food and she stopped scratching. Hopefully Beegee is getting better soon! :aimeeyork |
scratching My Latte has been scratching and paw-licking for a while. She has allergies, and has had a couple of prednisone shots over the years. But they hurt her too much! Now we have prednisone pills and I try to give her the tiniest bit every three days. I found that she's allergic to chicken and I got her a food that also has no corn in it. I am supplementing her food with real beef. I feel like the prednisone makes her sluggish, but I'm not sure. Does anyone else give prednisone? I would like to know any side effects you notice. p.s. we just got a kari-pet front pack. It's wonderful for walks!!! |
Chachi was on prednisone for about a month when he had bad allergy problems. I read that its not good to have them on that long term since it is a steroid. I was glad when he no longer had to take it. He didnt have any side effects when he was on it |
