De-worming I just came across an ad about de-wormers (spelling?) and realized that I am not doing this on a regular basis- was I suppose to? Simba's now a little over a year and was de-wormed by the vet the last time around August. Do you guys do it yourself or am I suppose to have it done by the vet on a regular basis? Thanks. I have never wormed any dog, after it's initial baby worming. Is your dog around a lot of other dog feces? If it isn't then it probably won't need it. |

They can actually get worms from fleas too, not just other dog feces. A dog should be wormed every 3 months is what they say, but I (like Jeanie K) have never wormed mine after the puppy worming and have never had worms (knock on wood). Since worming is so safe though I really do think you should do it at least once a year, if it's not covered in the heartworm preventative you use. |

is your dog on a year round heartworm pill like interceptor? Interceptor is a great med because not only does it prevent heartworms, but it prevents roundworms (the most common worm found in poop) and i believe a couple others. If you dog is on a different heartworm pill like hearguard as your vet if you can switch to Interceptor or order it from petmeds.com |

heartguard is absolutely fine. It protects against heartworms which is the main purpose. And as long as romeo is also on flea and tick meds (like frontline plus) then he'll be fine. I prefer Interceptor because that's what i'm so used to selling from all the vets offices i've worked at. But have no fears, i just read that heartgard also protects against rounds and hook. which means interceptor protects against rounds, hooks, and whips. that's the advantage of it. |

oh... he's on heartguard plus and k9advantix. he's my first pet so i'm not sure about all this stuff. i would freak if he had some weird worm. i'm going to ask the vet about interceptor. thanks...:animal37 |

in most cases your dog won't pick up worms as long as he stays mostly to your own yard and the yards of people you know. Its when they frequently visit dog parks and go on walks through the woods that they can pick up something that another animal left behind. I'm sure the Heartgard plus is fine for romeo. Though it never hurts to learn about new and other options. |
