floating ribs
 
Seeing as all you YT chatters seem to be so knowledgable I was wondering if any of you have come across floating ribs which grow outwards at the end. My dougal baby has them.

Now that he's losing weight for agility I'm feeling them again and I was just wondering if anyone had had any problems with them. The vet said it wasn't anything to worry about but I'm a natural born worrier and just wanted to check if anyone had any advice.

(My vet is really good and I trust her but I'm not 100% sure of her small doglet experience.)

So there IS another baby with this! I had never seen it before Gizmo. His last rib on each side curves out, the vet told us it wasn't a big deal either. Does this mean he should never be a dad? I felt much better when we found a food he liked a lot because he gained a little weight and you have to feel for them now. Were never able to see them, just feel them. My baby is gimp I guess.:rolleyes: Just something else to make him special. I really appreciate you posting about this, I feel better about it knowing there are others. Never heard it called floating ribs, we are careful how we pick him up and hold him.

My little Gypsy has these too. She was a champion show dog so I'm assuming that it's fairly normal (at least allowed in the standard). My vet didn't seem surprised by them at all either. Maybe some of the breeders on here could give some more information.

It's good to hear from others with the same thing and they've had absolutely no problems. I have to tell my husband not to play too rough with him just in case he hurts him. Thanks for the reassurance YT-ers :)

Edie has a floating rib that pokes out a bit....only on one side. The vet noticed it too. It's not anything to be worried about. Must be more common than I thought, though.

Floating ribs are normal. We have them. Our last two ribs (on the bottom) are attached only to the spine - and not to the sternum....hence, they are called "floating ribs."

I worked in x-ray for almost 30 years and have seen these ribs on films hundreds of times.

I supposed depending on their shape, etc., they could cause some problems, but normally they don't represent any problem at all - because this is the way they are supposed to be.

same here! i just noticed that Tiggy has the same thing! her middle is sooo wide!!! :eek:

does it mean the equivalent of a women with sexy curves????

Thank God! I feel better now that I know that my little Guinness is not the only one. He has only one tiny rib on his right that curves outward. I just want him to gain some weight so that he coudl be better padded.

Me again - I mentioned that floating ribs are "normal" and that we all have them. I also said that I worked in x-ray for many years and saw these on every chest film I looked at.

I should have mentioned - that even though they are normal and we all have them - ocassionally (very rarely), they are shaped a little different than they should be and are quite bothersome for some people. And - I have heard of them being removed for this reason.

Again - they are the last couple ribs on the bottom that are not attached to our sternum. This is the way they are supposed to be.

While visiting his new vet this week, upon examination the doc called his tech over to feel the hook shapes protruding from my baby's sides. Both said they have never encountered such. I smiled and covered Gizmo's ears and said he was discounted because he was "special". After licking his new doc square in the mouth he replied yes, he is;) . They are slightly visible in one of these pictures.

I wen to the doctor a few years back with a complaint that by my last rib it was sore and it felt like it moved a bit. She said that's just your floating rib.
I think that is what my Pom has on one side. Learn something new everyday!
