Exagerated Swallowing I had a bit of a scare tonight with Frankie. I just got back from the animal hospital. I had taken him outside to go to the bathroom this evening and he came back up onto the deck like gagging and then he vomited a couple of time but kept up the gagging so after a half an hour or so I took him to the hospital and they gave him an x-ray but didn't see anything so they gave him a seditive. Apparently he is doing what they called exagerated swallowing and is just swallowing air, so his belly is full of it. He wil be alright I just have watch him tonight and in the morning and if it doesn't go away go to my regular vet tomorrow for futher examination. I was so scared, I thought for sure he was choking on something. Has anyone else had anything like this happen? |
Wow! What a scare! Haven't had that happen, (thank goodness)! Why would he be swallowing air like that? |
I've never heard of that before. Can you divert his attention so he stops swallowing, like play fetch or chase him around or something? |
I have never heard of that! I'm so glad he's okay and feels fine tomorrow. My gosh...that MUST have been so scary! Puppy kisses from Maddie to Frankie! |
The doctor at the animal hospital said that he probably did swallow something large enough to irritate his throat and esophagus but small enough to where they couldn't see it on the X-ray, so that's the reason for all of the swallowing. He seems to be fine this morning (just a little gassy from all the air in his tummy). I gave him some ice chips last night and that seemed to help a lot. He wasn't doing the swallowing when he was calm and resting so I had to lock the cats out of the room and keep everything really quiet for him last night. It's funny how animals can sense things, I think the cats knew he wasn't feeling well so they were really calm around him too. (usually they chase each other around). He seems fine this morning so I don't think I'll have to take him in again, I have him with my mom so she can keep an eye on him and I'm going home early to check on him and get some sleep. |
