Only one testical???? I know it's been awhile since I posted, but I have been real busy with the new puppy, and all the spring clean up in the yard. Anyways my little 6 month old still has only one testical. The vet said if it hasn't dropped by now it probably won't. I want to get him fixed as soon as possible, but now the vet has me a little scared. He said that when the other testical don't drop they have to search for it which means they have to open them up more, and the surgery is a little more risky. On top of that he only weighs 2.5 and just turned 6 months old last Thursday. So the vet was hoping he would weigh a little more before surgery. I was wanting to get him fixed before he started lifting his leg. Anybody experience this before? Any input would be helpful. Thanks, Kim, Raven, and Beamer |
i don't know anything about this problem. but i hope and pray he is okay. |
Is your vet feeling it AT ALL? Sometimes, retained testicles can still be felt, they just have not dropped down far enough but can be stretched into place. If your vet does not feel it there, then yes, it can be up in the body cavity, therefore, requiring a more complex surgical procedure. Your boy is tiny. I know that you wanted to do the surgery before he starts hiking his leg, but with these special circumstances, I say to wait. Sometimes, the testicle won't drop till 8-10 months of age with smaller dogs. I'd consider giving it a little more time. |
Here's a recent thread about a dog having the neuter and the search for the undescended testicle. You could pm the Mom (carleirulesmes) and find out her experience. They're neutering pups as young as 8 weeks old now, but I personally would wait. If your vet is uneasy he may not have experience with small pups. Make sure he uses isoflurane gas with no pre-anesthesia injection whenever you have it done and pay the extra for the preop blood tests. A lot of Yorkies need to have retained baby teeth extracted so that would be another reason to hold off and do it at the same time. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40193 |
i used to be a vet tech and assisted in a couple of crypto surgeries. Its not as bad as it sounds. The doc will make a tiny incision in the testicle that has descended to take that one out and then make another incision in the abdomen as if the he were spaying a female dog. This will enable him to look around the penis and in the cavity beneath to find the other testicle. Some testicles take longer to descend then others but i wouldn't wait past 6 months to get it taken care of. undescended testicles left in the dog can become cancerous. I saw this happen to a golden once and it was not pretty. the owners never bothered to get their crypto dog neutered and his undescended testicle became cancerous and it was about the size of a football. The blood vessels running to it also wrapped around other organs and made the dog very sick. I know your not gonna let this happen and that you are just wondering how long to wait before getting him neutered, so if i were you i wouldn't wait too too long. if your uncomfortable with your vet doing the surgery because you feel he seems nervous about doing the more invasive surgery then take him to a specialist instead. But in most cases the testicle is found within minutes and taking it out is no problem at all. In teh end the pup will just have a longer incision on the belly, like a spayed female. |
Here is another thread about retained testicles from a buyer's/breeder's standpoint. However, there are several seasoned breeders that talk about this issue and what it CAN (not necessarily WILL) take to retrieve it. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...light=retained |
