Legg-Calves Perthes My Riley was just diagnosed with this hip joint ailment yesterday! :( Im so scared. He needs to have surgery. Has anyone out there experienced this? He is only 9 months old. And a whopping 12 pounds!! :D So much for a purse puppy! We have researched this and every web site says the same things, but they are all clinical. I need some real experience. He will have his surgery this weekend if all is well Thanks Tiffany |
my sister's dog had this it showed up on him at5 months old. he had surgery and u can't even tell he had surgery or the legg calves perthes. he runs on it and walks on it just fine. have u called your breeder that u got him from to let them know he has this.. she should give u another dog at the same price as you bought him for. call her and send her the test from the vet showing he has this... my sister got another puppy from the same breeder for the same price she didn't have to pay for him or the shipping. hope this helps you. |
I just wanted to lend you support although I cannot offer any experience with this condition. I have heard of it, but really know nothing about it. I am sure Riley will be okay. I will be thinking of him Saturday. |
I so hate to hear that. This is something I am not familiar with but will be checking into it now. I really hope your baby does fine and recovers quickly!! Best of luck and we'll be thinking of you Sat. |
My puppies boyfriend just had surgery for the legges perthes, and it went real well. It was done a week and a half ago. and he was tring to run around like his crazy self afterwards. You have to keep them calm until the stitches come out. Then therapy! They could have traded the puppy in for another one (he is 8 months). But there was no way they could give up their baby. So they will just eat the cost. I also would not breed your puppy. Their are many different opinions on whether or not it is herriditary (can't spell). Good luck! Jeanne |
a member on here, schatzie, her dog had to have some type of hip surgery but i'm not sure if it was for the same thing. maybe send her a PM and ask |
yes shatzie's dog had legges perthes and she was very helpful to us when my friends dog got it |
Tiffany - it will be ok. I know you are in shock now and probably in tears as I was too. There is just nothing worse than the vet finding bad news towards your fur baby. I about passed out when I heard the news. Schatzie was diagnosed with Legges Perthes and had surgery in January I believe it was, (my memory is slipping, LOL). She is using all four legs now as normal. She had surgery on her left rear leg. Her hair grows slow so as of now it's only about a half an inch long after being shaved. (yep, grows REAL slow)...But that is nothing major as hair is only cosmetic. Her surgery was a success, and Riley's will be also. Riley will be up and around in no time. Schatzie was 8 months old when diagnosed. Later in her life she could be arthritic (sp) but should be just fine. I could have used her health guarantee and received a refund but no way, I was in love with her. Her surgery was about $450.00 Just wanted to give you some positivie news towards a negative situation. Keep me posted on how the surgery goes. Schatzie sends hugs to Riley !! |
Schatze- My yorkie also had surgery for his Legge-Perthes. He had a femoral head excision on his right hind leg - complete removal of the ball of his joint. That is the normal surgery for Legge-Perthes right? Anyway, prior to the surgery, he was in definate and seirous pain. It has been a year and a half now, and he uses all four legs 85% of the time. However, when he runs full speed, he usually lifts it up quite a bit. Also, after serious excercise, I get the feeling that the area is sore for him. I massage the area gently, and he seems to like that. Do you and your yorkie experience anything like this? |
What are the signs for Legges Perthes? I'm just curious. |
Has anyone heard how Riley is doing?? Just saw Tiffany's post! Hope he is OK! |
Rileys update Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. Riley is doing great. Or as well as to be expected. He had his surgery Friday the 22. The vet says that everything went well. The bone was a bit more diseased than originally thought, so instead of just taking off one ball of the joint, they took of both. It is kind of scary looking. The vet says he will walk on it, but it just looks to me like its hanging in mid air. She says the muscles and joints will all pull together and work.. He has a cone on his head, his whole leg is shaved except for his foot, and he has a 2 inch scar running the length of his leg. And you dont realize just how skinny those legs are until its been shaved. We found out that he is a big ole 12 pounds. Its been a week and some and he still only uses it a bit, really only uses the toes. The vet says that means he is still in pain, he is on pain meds. He lets me move it around some, so there is a bit of hope that he will walk on it one day, and also the posts from other ones that have had this. The way we found out that he had this was that my husband threw the ball down the hall nd he went flying after it and it looked like his legs stopped but the rest of his body just kept going. so he was in pain from that, it went away, then later he would be running in the yard and he would hurt it again. or jump off the couch and so on. So since it never healed we took him in, we thought it was his knee but a $200 xray later found out it was the legg perthes disease. So the surgery was $695.75. I have now paid for Riley twice! and some said what about the insurance, well it seem that this is a hereditary thing and they dont cover that. oh well. So thanks again for the support. I knew I could find it here. Take care everone and I will kep you updated. (im just slow at getting around to responding-we are getting ready to move cross country and im selling my house, quitting my job......oh the joy of moving!) Tiffany |
Well I'm glad that Riley is doing well! Give him lots of love, hugs, and kisses from Hercules and Athena! |

It seems odd that from never hearing about LP I sure hear about it quite often now. I am glad your little one has recouperated from his surgery and has been on his way to complete health. Yes, if Schatzie runs a muck for long periods of time she does seem to be sore to me. I too rub her leg and hip area as she seems to enjoy it. She too uses her hind left leg 85-90% of the time except runs at full speed. The vet says she is healing very well and that eases my worries. |
Sorry to keep harping on a sore subject. I was reading that the surgery only cost $450?!!! I paid $1200!!! And that was in light of an alternative which was even more expensive. Furthermore, the surgeon (who is well known in the community) screwed up the first time around, and had to put Armaneo under a SECOND time, 1 hour after he came out of anesthesia - to re-open the incision and do more work. Needless to say, Armaneo barely made it out from anesthesia the second time. His heart pressure was way too low, and his body temperature would not stablize normal levels. He had to be put in a special unit to maintain temperature. My mother, who happens to be an anesthesiologist, attested to the fact that even humans, going under general anesthesia twice in that short of a period is extremely taxing. And that his post-op symptoms were very abnormal. Anyway, we recently got his teeth cleaned for the first time, and I discovered that as a general matter, he does not take well to anesthesia. Supposedly, the doctors had difficulty with him again. When I picked him up, he was very very messed up. Blood on his face, head hair was all wet, eyes glossed, crying for hours.... My friend's dog that I had taken with him at the same time, for the same cleaning, looked compeletely normal. Do people on this board tend to take their yorkies to get their teeth cleaned under anesthesia? And if so, aren't they concerned with the effects of anesthesia - long and short-term? |
