Vaccines...need help!
 

I have a question regarding vaccines, Louie got his second round of them today and the vet suggested I vaccinate him for lyme disease? I've heard this vaccine is not good for yorkies?? Is this correct? Should I be vaccinating him for lyme disease??? Help!

I would be very careful on vacines.. for example-- do not do LEPTO on your Yorkie, and do not do rabies until at least six months or longer, as these are very hard on Yorkie pupppies.

Ask your breeder about shots. Some vets are vaccine crazy! But as the Mom / Dad- its what you want that should rule..

I know you have to be careful about vaccines but I think lyme is an important one because they could get ticks and in turn could get lyme disease. I know Ivy got it at around 8 months and she was fine.

Bella went today for her 13wk vaccines and the Dr gave her a sm portion of rabies. She said it was fine with her and most dogs won't react. Seh said any reaction would be within the 1st 2hrs and she has been fine but sleepy. In 2 weeks she is getting the Lyme one. The Dr said some people don't want it so it was up to me but since we live here in CT where Lyme disease started and is everywhere and have woods behind me the vet said I should get it.

Did anyone else's yorkie get the portion of rabies at 3 months? Bella does seem sleepy now which the Dr said would happen.

Rabies should never be given before six months in my knowledge. My St. Bernard will not get his until he is around 8- I am waiting. Feliz will not get hers at least until she is a year.

I only do the 7 way- and the bordetella. I space these out by months, and take them nowhere until they have the 2. I usually order them from Fosters and Smith. As for the others, I don't live in your area- but between using:

Biospot, Rosemary, Lavender, Pennyroyal, and the fleabuster natural powder- boric acid, and some other things, on a regular basis, I don't over immunize, immunize too freq. or give anything else. (These items will take care of fleas, mosquitos, ticks, flys, etc.)

Too many dogs get cancer now, and I believe it is from what we expose them to. When I was little, I had dogs, all they ever got was rabies, and they lived to a ripe old age. They never got any other vaccines, or trips to the vet. I believe strongly in wholesome foods, and minimal immunizations given at the longest intervals possible for animals to have long healthy lives.

Too many immunizations too soon will overwhelm their immune systems I believe, and not let them do what they need to.

I guess she can't get her license or go to puppy school or the spa without it here in CT.

I asked the vet and said I thought she didn't get it until she was 8 months old and she told me no she had to have it now and was giving her a small dosage?

She said to watch for face swelling the 1st two hrs and if there was any to call the vet. She said Bella would be very sleepy and that is about it

Well Bella had the shot near her rump about 5pm and her face never swelled, she is sleeping, looks up every once in a while but when I try to pick her up, I know her rump hurts as she cries.

Hopefully she will be OK in the morning, I will just have to keep a very close eye on her tonight!

I just hope this rabies shot doesn't hurt her :( poor litt le thing

The good news is she is otherwise very healthy and gained almost a full lb in 3 weeks, so the vet said it's time to go to only feeding 3 times a day and not to keep the food out all day only water.

Moonvalley - thanks for the info, I hope the vet didn't make a big mistake, she does have a yorkie herself though!!

Diesel had a lyme disease shot at 4 months. He said it was needed in case Diesel is bit by a tick. He also had his rabies shot at 4 months. He seems to be pretty healthy to me. I think you should consider it.
