What Exactly Are Meat By Products?
 
Okay, I'm "guilty" of the comment: Don't by dog food with meat by products. Try Merrick's, Wellness, etc. But...

What the heck are meat by products? and Why are they not so good?

Is it like a dog eating hot dogs everyday? If anyone knows what by products are, I probably don't want to hear it (it'll gross me out), but I want to know! :p

Also, do you ever buy treats with meat by products in them? I know I have some treats with it (Bil Jac Liver Treats). Those are her absolute FAVORITE and I don't want to take those away from her. :D

For all of those who don't want to read the whole article, here is what Elizabeth says about by-products.

What are meat by-products? What are by-products in general? Anything not included in the 'meat' category that is from slaughtered animals. What about hooves and beaks?

Elizabeth Warren: No, those aren't, it's just the clean flesh as described above. Basically what's left when meat or other products are prepared; by-products of the manufacturing of another product. These will include the organs such as the stomach with its contents, the head, feet, etc. But not hair and feathers.

But, is that really "bad" or just, "not as healthy" :confused: ?

Hey Glad, no hooves included, yet some people (myself included) buy the cow hooves! :eyetearss

Hey, at least the hooves aren't in the FOOD! I can't imagine they are of any nutritional value at all. :p

I would merely think that organ meat is not that great. Some organs of the body are used to filter out toxins and harmful agents in the bloodstream, and these things collect in the organs for removal. If there is a high concentration of toxins in the organ, and they use the organ in the pup's food, I cannot see how that can ever be good...Anyhow, I would simply do my best to avoid them.

The 'meat byproducts' that go into commercial pet foods include such things as:[list][*]Hair[*]Toenails [*]Intrails[*]Congealed fat[*]Hooves[/list]Primarily, 'byproducts' of slaughter houses not suitable for human consumption. Now, the hooves and intrails are actually not bad for your pooch - when fed FRESH. But, by the time they're 'processed' and sit on a shelf in the congealed fat - well. Plus commercially prepared dog foods contain 'fillers' that just take up space in a pet's stomache - not delivering any nutrition at all.

Treats: It's fairly simple to make one's own liver treats. Buy a beef liver. While it's still frozen, cut into treat-size pieces, and bag up so the pieces don't touch and stick together. Refreeze. Voila'! FRESH preservative-free liver treats for pooch. Or, do a search on dehydrating liver. You can do this in your oven.

Cool, thanks for the liver treat info! I might just have to try that. :D

PS. So you do this raw and feed frozen?

Yes, RAW. My senior mix, "Mozart" loves his liver-sicles! Remember, though that this is 100% liver; so be judicious about how much you give, or you might end up with loose stools! Of course, if your pup doesn't take to frozen treats, then you'd do well to look into dehydrating - the frozen does get messy when it starts to thaw, so you want something they'll eat right away.

I've just heard so many nasty things about meat by-products...

I have a friend who used to work with an animal shelter, and now has 8 cats, and she makes me promise NEVER to feed anything with meat by-products to my pets.

Somehow I ran across some food that both my cats and my Yorkie love, and it contains no by-products! They sell treats too, but I haven't bought any yet. I do promote them now, though, because now I realize how important it is to feed your pets healthy stuff.

I'm not sure that I want to know either. But if you think about it, dogs in the wild eat it all. But if it just the things that could not be sold for human food, then I suppose it's not all that bad.

As for hooves, They wouldn't include them because they can sell them in another market and charge dearly for them.

When the farrier trims the horses hooves, dogs love those.
