Puppy Fear Stages I read a while back that puppies have two fear stages. One, if I remember correctly, at about eight to ten weeks and then another that I think is around fourteen weeks (but I can't remember if that's right). Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I can't remember where I read it but today I've noticed that Badger is being more skittish than usual - reacting to loud sounds, being weirdly timid when I move suddenly. He'll be sixteen weeks on Saturday? As some of you may know, he is a little bit of a shy boy but we've made huge strides with him... he even pulled me over on the weekend to go meet a Rottweiler (who was terrified of him!)... so I'm a bit surprised and hope it's just part of this phase  |
I'm not sure on exact stages. But I found that after being cooped up in the house all winter Parker is REALLY skittish this spring! It's awful he's scared of his own shadow. Last fall he'd chase people in the park, this year he hides behind my legs and shakes. I hope he gets used to everything again, the more we are out. He's 10 months now. |
Ah okay. Thankyou. I'm wondering if it's because I've been on edge whilst walking him the past few days because of my new and sooo brilliant fear of him being attacked by a bull terrier (much thanks and appreciation to the delightful couple who's dog tried to attack him on Saturday and thought I was being ridiculous) Thanks Parker's Mum x |
I think I got a good combination. My little Yorkie - is a real "submissive-at-first" and somewhat "shy" little guy. BUT - he never hesitates to run up and meet anyone (a person or another dog). For instance, his favorite thing in the world is little children. But when he meets one for the first time - without any hesitation, he'll run up to meet them crawling on his tummy and will immediately turn over onto his back with a lot of kissing and wiggling along the way - aftrer they have petted him for a second, they are off playing their hearts out. I haven't notice much difference in his behavior since I first got him -- no stages that appear different, etc.... he is 8 months now. Carol Jean |
I think from my reading that you are right-there are two fear stages, but a little later than you mentioned--at 12-14 weeks and then later at 16-18 weeks. So your pup could be in the second, especially if he displayed fearfulness before. The experience with the other dog you mentioned won't have helped either. I can understand you being tense, but he will pick up on that. Try to be calmly reassuring without making a big thing of it and he should settle down again. We had a similar problem with traffic, but she has got over it now.Good luck. |
