Garlic and dogs
 

I was reading on another post that GARLIC is poisonous to dogs..I was wondering if there's any truth to this? My 11 week old puppy wasn't eating so now I boil chicken for her and I read somewhere that dogs like the smell of garlic so i sprinkled GARLIC POWDER into the water and make a broth that I pour over her food and she loves it. Do you think she's in any danger from the GARLIC POWDER in her broth? Thanks a bunch for any responses.

I am sure garlic is not poison to dogs, when I was a kid we had a boston terrier that would go in the kitchen and steal garlic, then run and jump in my dads lap to burp,causing the stinkiest burps ever,but never did he get sick,just loved the fun of teasing my dad, he never did it to anyone but my dad,so I say NO :aimeeyork

An excessive amount of garlic can be toxic to dogs. A sprinkle in broth should not hurt.

I dont think what you are doing wouldd hurt because I have seen garlic pills for dogs. They are supposed to be good flea protection.

If garlic were bad for them how come so many dog foods reek of garlic? I believe it is onions that are not good for them.

i think galic is fine. a local doggie bakery has garlic flavored cakes. i'm sure they wouldn't if garlic is toxic to dogs.

its used for fleas and is also good for there blood. also yes it is onions that are toxic,some dogs react badly to them but others dont, my zac has fits if he eats any onion but his brother is fine.

I don't think garlic is harmful to dogs. They make these pills (vitamins) called Brewers Yeast w/garlic. The garlic in them makes their coat shiny & glossy. :D

Garlic is actually a natural dewormer :) it can be toxic to dogs when given in high amounts...like everything else, moderation is the key ;)

I asked my vet about this not to long ago. She said that it's from the same family as the onion it is not good for dogs and that a small amount very occasionanly is ok. She also said that it's a myth that it keeps the fleas away. Her opinions.

I agree - garlic isn't bad for dogs. Mine eat a fair amount of it because they eat leftovers ---and we are garlic-loving people.

Raw onions are bad for dogs (most dogs won't eat them anyway). Cooked onions don't bother them.

But - let's be honest - how many of us are feeding our dogs a lot of garlic and onions on a daily basis. Probably none! So - the occasional garlic and onions they get can't hurt them.

****** I have had dogs all my life, and, to my knowledge, I have never had one have a problem with any food I have ever fed them. They have always all gotten a variety of different foods -- and not a total ton of any one food.

I think the exception to my experience might be for some people who have a dog with a "sensitive stomach" (like some people have). In this case, you may have to be more careful about what your dog eats. But, more often than not, they can eat a little bit of practically anything.

**** Grapes are bad for dogs!!! My pup (8-weeks old) ate a whole bowl full of them (by mistake) the first week I had him... didn't bother him at all. But, believe me, I never deliberately feed him grapes, and I don't think he has had many since then.

That not true unless they eat a pod of garlic or a bottle of pills...
It is very common to give garlic and yeast to dogs to help with coat, fleas and the smell of the dog. I have serveral breeders that highly recommend using it instead of the pesticides for fleas. I have been giving my pooch 1/4 a tablet for a week and he doesnt smell as bad when he comes in from outside. It takes about a month to see the full effects. A few site said that the smell part doesnt work on every dog. As for the fleas, well that season has just started so we will see. At the sign of the first flea I may be using the monthly stuff. He likes the pills and the vet said his coat should look great to boot.
