How Often Clean Teeth By Vet? I brush my furbabies teeth every night. Last night I noticed he has a little plaque on his back teeth. Those teeth are hard to clean because they are so far back. So I was wondering, how often do you bring your dog to the vet to get his teeth cleaned? My little one is now 11 months. I figured a major cleaning once a year is good but am not sure. |
Once a year may be fine. But, I know that Bichions (I have one) have bad teeth just like Yorkies do. I had my 4-year-old Bichon at the vet's six months or so ago - and he looked in his mouth and said that he should probably get his teeth cleaned sometime this next year. So - since all dogs are different (and all Yorkies are different) - I would get them cleaned prn (as needed). Let your vet check your pup's teeth occasionally (at least once a year), and he'll tell you when they need cleaning. My pup is 9 months old, and his teeth are as clean as snow - so far. Of course, he hasn't had some of them very long yet - right! Carol Jean |
I get my furbabies teeth cleaned once a year, that way I am assured their gums and teeth stay healthy. Helen |
I have my fur babies' teeth cleaned every once a year; however, I clean and hand scale in between visits. I've found that some of my dogs teeth stay clean and don't require much professional cleaning, if any at all. While some others may require a professional cleaning much more frequently. |
He is going to the vet on Sat. for a check up so I will ask him then. Thanks. |
Leix is a little over one and she just went in for her first teeth cleaning, they recommended once a year depending how bad they get, lexi could have waited a little longer but i just wanted them to be clean. |
Mojo is 2 and a half and i want to get his teeth cleaned for the first time this year. But i am so nervous to have him put under...:( |

To just brush the dogs' teeth, the dog would not need to be put to sleep, not even taken to the vet for that matter. It's only those tuff cleaning jobs that would require the dog to be put to sleep. It's then easier on the dog and the vet. |
I was reading another post and it said they do teeth cleaning at Petco. I assume they don't put the dog under, right? Has anyone taken their dog to Petco to have their teeth cleaned? |
Maddie is now around 18 months and so far, has no plaque or tartar at all. I am using a product called Life For Teeth and Brush Away that is supposed to be amazing stuff. If your dog has tartar or plaque, using this will clean it up. If it is as wonderful as they claim, she will hopefully never have to have her teeth cleaned. The Life for Teeth I spray in her mouth once a day and the Brush Away Gel I just use a couple of days a week. You can see before and after pics at their site and read testimonials. Great, thanks. I will check it out. |
I thought you only had to get their teeth cleaned at the vet if something was really wrong??? I didn't know it was something you routinely do. I guess they are just like humans. Anyone know how much it is to get their teeth cleaned? I think Wookie needs a cleaning soon. |
I think it all depends on your dogs' teeth. Every one is different. My Maltese has had hers done every year since she was 3 years old (10 now), and they still build up tartar very quickly and her breath gets stinky. I have always had a hard time brushing hers. This last time, she had a root canal done! I thought it was best to save whatever teeth she has, as she has had a few extracted over the years but not more than 3 I think. My Bichon is `12 years old and has never had his done. The vets are amazed at how he has barely if any tartar or build up on them. He and the Maltese have always eaten the same food. Go figure. I might brush his once every couple weeks at most. I just read the thread on the teethfor life product and am going to order some and see if that helps Bitsys' teeth (Maltese) On another note, I have always been scared of the putting under anesthisa thing whenever Bitsy goes in, since she is so small. But her vet does special bloodwork and tests before they will do the cleaning to be sure it is safe to put her under. They are also monitered constentely by an assistant for vital signs, temp etc. She is kept warm as well during the procedure, and on IV fluids. This has put me at ease some when she goes in, but it is always a risk just as it is with the human surgery procedures. If this teethfor life stuff works that will be great!! You may want to talk to your vet about the details of the procedure for cleanings and what steps they take to ensure your little furbaby is monitered and checked on. How many assistants are on hand? What type of anesthesia etc. Hope this helps AprilLoves' Mommy |
